Oh yes, one other trick that Paul taught me a about week ago that everyone should be made aware of... When you have a boat with a unit in it (longboat, etc...), you can FIND islands simply by moving the curser around and when it turns green, you've found land.

    • Questions (for Solver)

      Nanite Defuser in or out?
      Are we modifying pollution file?
Are we agreed on scoring system?
Do we have a definitive list of people in comp now?

Dragon taught me that one many months ago.... and I certainly do use it...... not that it makes any difference on a premade map - You can actually do it with a trireme even if the fanged ship can't get there.... Yoda, I thought that was one everyone knew anyway?

I've been playing CTP for about as long as anyone has. And even with having the record I do, I never knew about these tricks. I learned about the rush/buy switch several months ago; about the PW trick here on the forum after dragon posted it when the tournament threads started and about the boat trick a week or so ago from Paul. Oh yes, and the ramp-up trick from Dr. Doom the other day.

          • To my CTP friends:

I'm sorry Gavrushka, but you are the one who appears to be missing the point. Judging from the responses posted so far, I'd say Quinns and Blackice are the voices of reason in this discussion--not you.

As you may recall, in my first message I agreed that clever ramp-up switching strategies are not necessarily cheating, if the pre-established game rules don't prohibit them.

However, it is a sad fact of life that not everyone is willing to abide by the rules. And unfortunately there are some very clever tricks available to CTP players, which if used in the upcoming tournament would most certainly be cheating. MANY PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF HOW THESE TRICKS/CHEATS ARE USED, AND THEREFORE ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO SPOT THEIR USE IN THE TOURNAMENT.

Unless of course someone brings them to light ahead of time, and opens people's eyes to their existence. Get your eyes open Gavrushka.

            Dr. Doom

P.S. The discussion may be over for you, but obviously it isn't for others. I'm going to continue to post until the issue is resolved. Unfortunately however the subject is complex, so you'll just have to bear with me.

            • Dr. Doom, thanks for the above vote of confidence, but this "trick or cheat" discussion has moved to this thread...

This has gone off topic of this thread.

              • I haven't followed this thread and since it's quite large to read it all I just wanted to ask if it's a Tournament for Online or PBEM or both games or not even a Tournament.

                • Yoda,

                  I decicde the official rules.

                  - no wonders (except nanite defuser and wormhole sensor)

                  Yes
                  - 100 gold, 1 settler

The opinion seemed to go for it... yes
                  - pre-made map

We have the map, and here I also need Gav's agreement
                  - Pollution on but with modifications

                  No... I mean no modifications
                  - diety/no barbs

                  Yes
                  - standard starting 3 tech

                  Yes
                  - no piracy

                  Yes
                  - pillaging is ok

                  Again yes
                  - no nukes

                  Nukes are allowed.
                  - no rush buy tricks of any kind
                  - no rush PW tricks

Right... both are cheating, so none.
                  - saved games by both players on every turn with review by the losing player with contested games being sent to the judges.

I think good moderation rules, strict enough.

Keygen - this is an Online Tournament to determine the best CtP player under the hardest conditions, this is why we also decided for 1 Settler, 100 gold, 0 PW start.

Now when Gav tells me that the map is OK, we can start. As for the player list, I'm not competent to determine who's in and out... we have a list of all who wish to enter, and I don't know the people well enough, so I don't feel like I have the right to say someone out.

                  • The map hangs turns on units for a while- but it would appear that it is not buggy - my error, turns may be slow, but there are no speed restrictions.

I say it is time to get everyone to confirm entry, start a new thread and get this show on the road.... Note that it appears there may be an offer of a further 1000USD making the total 2000USD.... but this is yet to be confirmed.

                    • I would add no file modifications and or third party game tweekers, game tweekers period and or slic commands. Just my two cents worth.

                        I agree with Mr. Blackice.

And yes... Let the games begin!

                        • pollution

If anyone is interested, here is what a map looks like after a few disasters. This is without using nukes and with only one player building oil refineries. I have deleted all units/cities so that it is just the map (or what's left of it) to look at. This is why I'm suggesting a modified pollution file. Solver, I know your word is final but I thought everyone should be made aware of just how devastated the map becomes.

To get this to work, you need to place "junk" in your scenarios and then unzip this file in there. (scenario/junk, scenario/junk/scen0000, etc...)

                          • Thanks Yoda. The match versus Gavrushka and I a few months ago had a map that looked much worse than this. The lesson for all of us, I believe, is DON'T BUILD SO MANY POLLUTION PRODUCING BUILDINGS UNLESS YOUR POLLUTION CLEANERS CAN KEEP UP WITH THEM. Just because we CAN build a production or gold enhancing building doesn't mean we necessarily SHOULD. If one player wants to pollute, unilaterally, then maybe that is part of their strategy -- i.e. POLLUTE THE ENEMY TO DEATH.

I think that the pollution is part of the game. Control it or suffer the consequences. I don't think we should alter the game to nullify pollution.
