They are great fun, very social and force your brain to work sometimes
Civ type games are quite difficult to play if you have no background with such games or at list some serious board games and I beleive that's the reason most people move to the easier and faster RTS like AoE. The boring stuff they claim is half the truth. The other half is that they give up too easy and don't learn how to play it
