  • Possible release of CtP1&2 souce code to the public by Activision...

There is a chance that Activision will release the source code of Call to Power 1 & 2 to the public after the attempt of the CtP2 community to convince the company to do that and the intermediation of Mr Ogre.

Below are two posts of Mr Ogre:

A lot of the source materials for art and data are probably gone forever if Activision's archive is lost. But I'm 100% certain it's still possible to scrape together enough code to rebuild an exe.

I can't make any promises, and I'm not even sure posting this before I hear back from anyone (I emailed a vice president just for you!) is such a good idea. I don't want you to get your hopes up too much. I would love nothing more than to see the source released, but it's still Activision's property, it'll have to go through them.

The annoying part is that the person I've talked to would like all the comments stripped from the code to avoid releasing anything that might hurt Activision's image (most of the concern there is over potential remarks re Microprose and Avalon Hill left over from when it was Civilization: Call to Power) or anyone's personal feelings. I'm sad about that, because there are some funny ones in there, and it'll make understanding it all that much harder. But it's still better than nothing. There's little to no direct financial incentive in this for anyone, and the only alternatives are not doing it at all, or paying someone there, a lawyer most likely, to scan every single comment for legal ramifications, and it is a rather large code base. The whole "Civilization" thing on the first game was a very messy business, so while I'd be with you guys in thinking that concern is pretty silly, I think lots of things lawyers do are silly... until I'm court being grilled by one .

Mr Ogre - if I remember correctly - is Joe Rumsey, the creator of the SLIC, the CtP's scripting language, former employee of Activision.

For the full story go to the activision thread in the "CtP2-Creation/AI/Mods/Scenarios" forum.

Solv, leave this thread in this forum for a week and then move it to the "CtP-Creation" forum

    Geez, Keygen, misinformation, misinformation .

The posts you quoted are old. Yes, Mr Ogre is Joe, the man behind CtP2 and SLIC. But, Activision's st_swithin has posted that yes, the CtP2 source code will be released - there has been further info on that. Go to http://apolyton.net/ctp2 for the info.

And it has never been said that the CtP1 code will be released. Also, check CtP2 creation forums for our latest thoughts...

Mind you, Ogre is currently supposed to have the code and be preparing it for our use.

      And another one.

C:CTP DOES NOT EXIST AS A SEPARATE ENTITY. Unless maybe Mark Lamia has a record of it, but I don't think anyone on the team actually bothered burning a copy of the C:CTP codebase branch before we started modifying it for CTP2.

Unfortunately, we also killed all the fuzzy logic AI as well, so I don't think there's any of that left. Too bad - if someone could have found a way to defuzzify it, it would have been the best AI ever written.

Fuzzy logic thinking caps off, everyone!

CtP1 was mentioned as well in that email Big Mc had sent, but not in Rumsey's post. Yes, it is not clear that CtP1 will be included and it appears that the code has gone unless someone kept a backup afterall.

Whether CtP1 source code is released or not the fact is that CtP2 was based on CtP1 and the former used a lot of code from the latter so it is there

So st_swithin is Winnie Lee, right?

          Yeah, st_swithin is Winnie Lee.

And, for the most part, all talks were about CtP2, not CtP2. We're getting CtP2 code, and yes, it does use lots of CtP1 code, but AI code is all different.

Solv, though it looks pretty promising don't forget that Mr Ogre and st_swithin are no longer working for Activision and no formal announcement or comment has been made from the company.

Personally I'm confident but wouldn't put my hand into fire for that

Well, I try to stay optimistic. After all, Activision said source would be sent to Ogre, and we got no statement saying that this is not the case, so I better assumethat it is .
