    ==> Gained access to horses at the end of last turn, so now we can build knights (10 attack power, no defense bonus, 2 movement points).

    ==> GS attacked our stack of chucks that was going around to flank them.
    • Catapult vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 5.9%
      ==> Catapult 0/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 84/100, Collateral damage to 3 units
    • Catapult vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 13.3%
      ==> Catapult 0/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 81/100, Collateral damage to 3 units
    • War Elephant vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 74.6%
      ==> War Elephant 0/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 19/100
    • War Elephant vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 74.6%
      ==> War Elephant 28/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 0/100
    • War Elephant vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 68.5%
      ==> War Elephant 0/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 3/100
    • War Elephant vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 92.5%
      ==> War Elephant 0/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 29/100
    • Skirmisher vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 97.5%
      ==> Skirmisher 100/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 0/100
    • Skirmisher vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 99.8%
      ==> Skirmisher 80/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 0/100
    • Skirmisher vs Cho-Ko-Nu : combat odds 100%
      ==> Skirmisher 100/100, Cho-Ko-Nu 0/100

    If you look at those combat odds and the actual results, I think we should thank the Random Number Generator again.
    ==> 2 catapult attacks from GS with collateral damage, which we stood up well against.
    ==> 3 war elephants killed by 3 cho-ko-nus, against the odds
    ==> 1 war elephant severely wounded (28/100) by our fourth cho-ko-nu
    ==> then GS used 3 skirmishers to finish off our 3 wounded cho-ko-nus without suffering any damage themselves.

    The last GS' skirmisher is now on the tile where our units where attacked. We should be able to kill him without problems.

    I'll post a screenshot of the battle situation right away...

    May I besides in Beijing also suggest placing garrisons in Xi'an, Mhasa, Dongjing and Shanghai?

    How about renaming Hun to one of these?:

      Mhasa does not really need one since it is producing military units and military units are passing it in constant stream, Dongjing will produce one after current build, Xi'an is pretty safe - it will lose it's unhappiness once our workers make a gem mine, Shanghai - yes, first they should share one with DongJing, then DongJing should make one for them.

        Wow! Yeah we were pretty lucky alright. Poor GS turn player ... I would have been yelling swedish obscenities at the screen and throwing pencils around the room when I lost that last 92.5% battle

        They were probably expecting to lose 1 elephant or so, not 3 ... Can some clever person sum up the amount of hammers lost on either side?

        Those ellies are very dangerous though, our knights won't stand a chance. Any chance we can cut off their ivory supply? Should we bring down a cheap spearman or two? They have even odds (+ terrain) against ellies as I recall.

          The total losses for them is 60*3 + 2*40 = 260h, our - 60*4 = 240h.
          The only problem is that we lost lvl4 units while they lost lvl0-1 units, so this was actually a mistake on our (my) part - if we had moved all troops together we a least wouldn't lose so many units.

          We should get pikes, spearmen ain't better than maces.
          We will have Engineering in some 5 turns, so it's not that far.

            Isn't that what the galley is for? To cut off the ivory, and perhaps at a later point the iron too?

            Anyway, I agreed we suffered a defeat, not a victory.

              Did most of the stuff except moving the southern military.
              Did not attack the sword in forest - odds were 85%, but moved ahead - it will be circled in maces and a chuck for a couple of turns now so it cannot do anything bad.
              A knight is also coming out in 2 turns from Mhasa.

              Good news are we're twice ahead of everyone in score, mfg and crop (and in mfg GS is a distant 3rd) and +75% from gs in GNP.
              If funding is kept up we can have Engineering in 4 turns.

              That means we should sell something to Horde in the upcoming 2 turns.
              There are 2 techs they are not likely to buy - Meditation and Polytheism and some more which are considerably more expensive than they have (180g), first being Alphabet and Monarchy @ 429b.

              Regarding Mercs trade - I think it will be fair to offer them Monarchy - they cost the same and we have little use of Drama other than it being a prereq.

                  For the southern military, there's only 2 options :

                  => A) move both stacks together through the northern mountain pass, but leave there exposed skirmisher alone

                  => B) move the 3mace+2chuck stack along the same path as our killed chucks; killing their exposed skirmisher along the way.

                  As BT constantly says it would have been better if we had moved our units in 1 big stack, I think we should do that now. A skirmisher shouldn't be too hard to kill inside the city...

                  Also, we should prepare those units against a new attack from GS and use our promotions right now. I know we can use them to heal, but if our units are killed, it doesn't matter.

                  I would put combat I+II on our maces and combat I + cover on our chucks. Ideally we would put city attack on our units, but that won't help us defend ourselves...

                    But from the other point of view having to focus on targets so much apart as their ivory resource and that stack moving south will have them pretty stretched.

                      If we go for units really scattered around, we should also bring in our explorer on a different tile. It will finally give us info about the city + it will be an other "target" for GS to spend a unit on.

                        That's another idea, or alternatively add it to one of the stacks, so it gets better chance of survival up to the city.

                          I also renamed Hun to Hunoi (I think we already agreed to it earlier), but we still need to rename Shanghai, Nanjing and Xian (we have 2 Xians now).

                            when we keep a stack on an open tile, it's good to have spearmen/pikemen.
                            Pike would defend against ellies well: 4x2 = 8.

                              Elies wont be a concern after Taz is captured or the Ivory Pillaged, so building spearmen now or pikemen in the future will not do much. I'd suggested building spearman much earlier when it would have been useful for force diversity and protection (but some people disagreed ) now theirs no point.

                              I think overall this will be a phyric victory for GS, they lost the core of their army and came out even on hammer costs (behind once we kill that Skirmisher), we had already established an acceptable loss ratio in excess of 3:2 and we beat that spread. I think they were tempted to attack by the favorable combat odds in the 70% range but they failed to realize these odds ignore first strike which our Chucks have in huge abundance and in actuality the odds were closer to 50%. In fact Drill promotions might have served us better then combat promotions.

                              I'd move our Mace stack onto the Skirmisher and the explorer on that same spot (because the GS Axe blocks him from circling around the city), the Chucks take the road into GS territory to attack the City from the north on the same turn the Maces attack from the East. We can transfer a Mace to North flank stack for additional protection if need be. We can and should move aggressively as GS has nothing left in Taz that can threaten our stacks.
