  • Tech Discussion

The long awaited tech discussion thread.

Our current tech has us researching ...

    Pottery (7)
    Iron Working (19 I think)

Q: do we want to swap these around so that we can use our iron (yeah right!) 7 turns earlier if we need to?

I prefer current order, because we are already falling behind technologically, so we need these cottages near capital.

I too prefer the current order. I think we'll want to build some cottages soon.

Yes lets stick with the initial plan.

I'd also stick with Pottery. We need to keep up with our new PAL.

              ok, ok, pottery it is.

              our PAL's recent email

Could we possibly get a technology plan? Although this makes the trade rather complicated, it’s probably the fairest thing to do and has the greatest mutual benefit.
So - smart heads! What is our mid term tech path?

Metal Casting (which PAL suggested) does not fit well with our plans; we are not Industrious and not likely to be players for the Colossus, so I'd probably say that's not a tech for us to be pursuing...

We need happiness desperately and have wines on hand, so we could offer to research towards Monarchy. Another tech that would be strong for our Organized civ would be Code of Laws, especially if we could land the religion there. One of those two would likely be my long-term suggestion for where to go after Iron Working.

I agree that Monarchy will be good here. If we can buy religious techs from Templars or Imperio, we can get to it pretty quickly, and we definitely need some happiness boost.

I can also see CoL as part of CS beeline. However, our empire so far is too small to benefit from courthouses, so I'd stick with Monarchy and Currency. (Or construction if we want an early war with Templars.)

I also tend towards Monarchy, as we have the wine and we can also use our mass produced warriors to raise our happy cap.

I agree monarchy is our next goal because we really need the happy. After that there are a whole load of options, but I like most of them that involve bulbing a great scientist

Let's ask what PAL want to research. If they want mathematics then we could agree on a monarchy for mathematics trade? Mathematics is important to us because of calendar.

Okay so it looks like the consensus so far was for Monarchy. I'm not sure but I don't think we have either Priesthood or Monotheism, correct? Do we have anything on the religious branch?

Nope, nothing there, not even Mysticism. Our hope is to trade for some of these techs (probably with Templars) once we get our hands on Alphabet.

Of course, we're still at least 12 turns from finishing Sailing + Iron Working, so this whole discussion might be a bit premature...

Okay so we have (numbers are original beaker costs not adjusted for map size or speed) from http://civ4.wikia.com/wiki - not sure if this is correct or not but it should be at least in the right proportions?

                            Starting techs:
                            Hunting (40)
                            Mining (50)

                            Researched:
                            Archery (60)
                            Fishing (40)
                            Bronze Working (120)
                            Pottery (80)
                            Animal Husbandry (100)
                            Agriculture (60)
                            The Wheel (60)

Traded (can not broker these techs):
                            None currently

                            Soon to have:
                            Sailing (100) - research
                            Iron Working (200) - research
                            Writing (120) - trade
                            Alphabet (300) - trade

After Sailing and IW, our options will be:
                            Aesthetics (300)
                            Currency (400)
                            Mathematics (250)

Monarchy (300), which will need some combinations of:
                            Priesthood (60)
                            Mysticism (50)
                            Meditation (80)
                            Polytheism (100)
                            Masonry (80)
                            Monotheism (120)

Down the road we can look at
                            Calendar (350)
                            Compass (400)

I want to add, that Aesthetics->Literature combined with our superior production and possible access to marble by then, would give us an excellent shot at GreatLib.
With cheap libraries, colosseums & theaters (access to dyes in our case as well) the upper tech branch looks very juicy for creative civs like ours.
