Not moving the worker - it's the chop settler while growing trick. The chop takes the same amount of time. You select a build that let's you grow (warrior). When chop has 2 turn left you cancel the order at end of turn. Next turn you change to settler, finish the chop. Turn after you switch back to warrior.

I checked and chopping definitely does take 3 turns on normal speed.

Winston has finished his chop and plans to build a mine on the hill he is standing on. That will finish just in time for The Wheel to come in and he can then build some roads southwards.

On most terrain. It takes 4 on tundra, desert, or ice.

Can we get an update on where the worker is and what his next plans are?

We have the Wheel coming in next turn and before we decide Pottery vs. Archery it would be nice to know what the plans are for the worker. If he has pressing roads to lay than it might make sense to hold off on Pottery. If he can easily get to a grassland river tile to cottage then maybe we would all agree on Pottery.

IIRC the worker mines the hill 1SE of the cows and will finish in two turns.

I think riverside cottages should be our top priority, because otherwise we'll fall hopelessly behind Imperio. With a commerce-heavy start like theirs, any human is likely to develop an early economic lead, and early cottages are our only chance to stay competitive.

While pottery is researched, we can start a road south. (Just remember to always cover the worker with a warrior to avoid tempting our neighbors.)

EDIT: Chopping the tile 1 east of capital might also be a good idea. I am not an expert on early chops, but any boost to our growth curve is good.

So far we have 2 suggestions for what the worker can immediately do:

                  (A) Road 1SW of the worker, heading to our next city
                  (B) Chop the grass hill forest 1N of the cows.

I'll post again my support for (B), although I would suggest picking the mine action, rather than chop and then mine. That will avoid the confusing chop overflow issue from the last time, since we'll be done the settler when it comes in. Hopefully those chop shields would go towards a second worker.

I vote (B). I never work cottages this early in SP; maybe MP is different. For now, the game is about grabbing special resources, which means food and hammers.

The problem is most competitive high-level MP play is played with always war settings. Even those games that allow declarations of war however will still see resources and production emphasized at the start. I can't recall ever playing a MP game starting in the ancient era where I built a cottage before chopping my first ring - I'd simply much rather have more units, workers, or settlers courtesy of the chops than a cottage.

I know all sorts of little micro strategies to try and optimize early military. The problem for me with this game is that the team makeup already implies a friendly non-aggressive game, so the MP-required stack of 20 horse archers for catapult defense for example probably won't be required

We also expect the game to last more than 100 turns though.

Can we break you and Atlas out as turn players when war is eventually declared?

Very true. There are however a fair amount of "Ironman" play-the-entire-game-on-quick-speed games, but even these are Always War.

Winston began a mine on the forested hill 1N of the cows on turn 35. The chop is due on turn 42.

We will produce our second worker next turn, and our current worker (Winston) has just finished his mine. What's our next plan of action for each?

I'm thinking that one (the new worker) should head immediately to the new city. It's a great location, and we want to get those resources up and running ASAP. My thought was that we could have Winston chop maybe one more forest (that grassland forest right next to the capital, on the river?) to help produce an archer, while growing to size 4, then have him start building a road to the second city. It should take us about that long to research Pottery tech, and then we can start a couple of cottages at the capital.

But of course, these are only suggestions.
