My inclination would be worker first, but in SP I always worry about the AI grabbing the good spots and boxing me in before I crank-out enough settlers. I guess I'd like to watch the debate before I vote.

I voted settler but then read UnO's idea of whipping a settler once we get BW and liked that too.

Because we just know fishing,hunting,mysticism (i.e.no job to worker)
and mining (just 1 hills to mine,i.e., 1F 3H, when we already have an
unimproved stone for 4H).
And BW is 11 turns far.

My first instinct was settler for the same reasons that Fed1943 stated, but given the number of votes for worker, I'd like to hear an argument for why worker-first would be preferable.

By the time we build either, we will know bronze working. (In fact, I propose building units/working on the barracks until we get close to Bronze Working then popping(whipping) whichever unit we decide on. )

A worker thus allows us to chop out a settler after it is built, and is thus a swifter path to having BOTH a second city AND a worker than building just the settler.

By the time that is done, one of the worker techs should be researched and he can improve whatever. Again, swifter upgrade of tiles than building settler first.

Thanks for the explaination UnOrth, that seems like a good plan (although it woudn't hurt to have a turn-by-turn). I've been playing almost entirely mods (and, shock, other games...) for the last few months, hopefully following this DG will peek my interest in refreshing my Vanilla BTS skills.
