I'm a Diplo Gamer. We play to tell a story, roleplay, mimic some world events, etc.
Ballance is not that important to us. Gamescore is only 1 of the factors that determine the winner. A civ with a bad position but good stories and diplomacy can win a game.

Thank you very much for your honesty. But please make sure this does not happen again in the future. This actually was a game that was played to be won, not to simply tell interesting stories.

    • Yes, I'll keep it in mind.
I never had the purpose to make it a story-game, but apparently it influenced me way too much nevertheless.

      • A few additions to Sulla's map comments -

It's definitely best to follow the starting point normalizer, which gets rid of bad tiles in the capitals BFC (assuming a settle in place). A few peak tiles at the RB start were definitely not as severe a penalty as the lack of resources, but they also fall into the "obvious edit" category. The jungle at the Templar start is pretty harsh (apologies if they moved their settler and were not supposed to have the jungle at the beginning).

If you think one landmass is too large, I think it's better to just turn it into ocean rather than making two peninsulas of pure desert. Besides the obviousness, it further hindered efforts by the western teams to sail around and contact Banana/Rabbits.

        • The requirement for 2 old worlds with galley contact and 1 new world is in itself bad design. There isn't a strategic balance that works on that map without making it toroidal, or being stuck with a "civ in the middle" problem. That, along with vasslas being on, was one of the reasons I backed out of playing the game in the first place.

We didn't move the settler, we had less appealing options.

            • Wow...so you had jungle in your starting BFC? That's brutal. The normalizer removes all jungle, although it always seems to grow back into my Gems before I can get a Mine on them .

              • Yeah, as much as RB complain about capital locations, Templars was worse. Surrounding lands weren't though.

                • I have been convinced that the other Templars also are not eager to open their forum.
conmcb25 promised me to talk to his team mates to see if a compromise could be made.
I also saw that in other teams some members were not eager to open their forums. It's not only a Templars thing, though they are the only ones where a majority voted in favour to keep it closed.

I'll keep you guys up to date.

                  • While I don't really want to get into this issue again, I think I speak for everyone at Realms Beyond in saying that we are deeply disappointed by the Templar decision, and cannot understand what is so amazingly secretive in their forum that they refuse to open it up to the public.

Because we are Childish incompetent losers.

Why can't you just accept RP's explanation and let it go?

Every single time one of you posts I get further and further away from making an attempt to resolve this. Quite frankly the only reason I am making the attempt is because RP and I have traded several PM's. My team voted over a week ago to keep the forums closed. They are scattered to the four winds. Your impatience on this issue isn't going to change that.

You guys wanted to open your forums, so whats the point? And it was made after you opened them. duh!

                          • I think the point is that you want your private forum to stay private because (insert your reasons here) while at the same time not extending those reasons to others by not reading their ex-private forum.

Would Templars be willing to provide answers to specific questions? I'll start ...
                            1. What was your purpose in playing this game? Fun / Win / Spoil / Other?
                            2. Were there many people in your team?
                            3. Was the play dictated by your team or a limited number of individuals?
                            4. Did you hate RB? If so, why? If not, why not?
                            5. Where you playing a OCC?
                            6. What took you so long to settle your 2nd city? Why the delay?
                            7. How come you didn't tech calendar and improve those sugars?
                            8. Why did you waste worker turns moving your workers to hills outside any city radius and mining them?

Suspected as much. Good to have that confirmed.

Is any of the Templars going to write a little sum up of their game in the public forums? We got summaries from all teams (except Imperio).
And from what I remember Aidun was very fond of writing in general.
His diplomatic messages surely took a longtime to read.

Hercules, as turnplayer, can you comment on your strategy for the game?
For example, finding yourself in a bad starting position, having an early UU, meeting your neighbours early on and NOT rushing them?

From what I read in the Imperio forums, diplomacy in this game was really messed up by all teams. Either not pursued seriously or gravely misinterpreted:
                              - Imperio suspecting a RB + PAL alliance
                              - RB suspecting extensive interaction between Templars + Imperio
                              etc.
