What about starting and then patching when available? I'd be much more inclined to start if we know we'll patch later.
some day I'll put a catchy phrase here

      Umm - yeah - what Dave_Shack said.

I was working under the presumption that #2 really meant - start soon, patch when it comes out.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

We can patch when it comes out.

            Let's start right away.
The majority voted for goodie huts and random events anyway.
We can just treat the patch as one global spanning random event.
If one team gains from patching and one team looses out on patching, so be it.

We've already lost 2-3 teams, and the patch hasn't even been anounced yet.

I vote for option 1 - start the game before all remaining teams lose interest. (A lot of RB members are frustrated with how long the setup is taking and while our team is unlikely to disband, the interest level is dropping.)

So if a patch is released during the game, will we be all be switching to it? And does that actually work with pitboss games? I doubt everyone will want to dual-install.

My understanding is that once the Host patches - the game patches - so all turn players will need to patch.

Typically there is a down time so that everyone can get patched up.

Yep. We have done that for other games. We may need the host (um that would be me...) to give an extra period of time that turn to allow everyone to get patched.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.

#1. Every time we ever chose to "wait for the patch" at Realms Beyond, we always ended up regretting it. Waiting another 10 days won't achieve anything. This game has been in planning since January; if the teams haven't figured out their civs yet, something seriously strange is going on behind the scenes. We've already lost one team, and the captain of another team during these lengthy delays. The longer this game waits to start, the less likely it is to ever finish.

Frankly, I'm not sure another patch is ever coming from Firaxis. Even if so, they're certainly much more concerned with the upcoming release of Civ: Revolutions than working on a patch for a three-year old game.
