Something tells me players would never research anything if research meant downgrading. Just use your MAs to take over the world.

Yeah, but if it takes 200 turns to build an MA, how ya gonna do it, huh?

That would be the point of the game... you'd start with a few really powerful units and end with masses of basically worthless units.

It's just a joke idea, though.

A game where one had no say in which tech was researched (random techs) would be interesting though.

I really like this idea. I enjoyed SMAC a lot when 'Blind Research' was turned on. An AU game like this would be sort of hard to implement; we would have to each promise to roll a die or something when we pick our next tech. It would make for a challenging game, though.

I honestly don't think we have to much to worry about cheating. I mean, what's there to gain? Besides that, you all seem to be a pretty honest bunch of people. There's a chance to "cheat" in every AU game to one extent or another. But I'm pretty sure no one does this.

And I too like the idea. I think it'd make stuff interesting.

It would push you to get a tech lead early and keep it, that's for sure.

I agree. It's just that rolling a die is not as elegant as the other AU games we've had so far. Not a big deal, but some players might feel this is all too "kinky" (in the non-sexual sense).

By the way, AU302 (why 302? you'll have to wait and see...) is ready to go. I'll have it posted within the next couple of hours. It's OCC. But the discussion in this thread has given us some good ideas for the next one.

One way, although no more elegant but very simple, would be to use a randomly assigned number, say 3. You would start by researching the 3rd tech (as presented in the advisors pull down list) and always research the 3rd tech he presents to you. If there are two choices, you would "count back around" to 1.
