Alexman contributed the idea of modifying tech costs so research can be viable in the early game without being super-easy later on. I went about it a bit differently from how he would have, but he deserves the credit for the basic idea (and I deserve the blame if the implementation turns out to be a disaster ).

No blame, it will either be fun or it won't. If not we will all just bail out.
No harm done. It is really an attempt to try something differnt and adds to the life of the game.
Some (maybe me) will find that is more work than they want, some will find the game is killing their machine, but hopefull all will get something out of the game.

So, when do we start? Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Let's start with a screenshot, so that you can all discuss while I get the game threads up.
Try not to pick Industrious, everyone!
As promised, this will be a long and challenging game. It is definitely beatable on your normal difficulty level, but because of the distance between islands, it is going to take an extended period of time to gain the upper hand. Just a warning for those who play for UP.And her eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming...

Incidentally, if you do not like spoilers, try not to read this thready anymore, as it will surely fill up with advice on how best to tackle the annoying start Dom gave you...

Interesting start. I haven't decided which Civ to play yet. I usually use China or France, but I didn't think they were options. I might try an expansionist, since I've never really used that trait before.
Off Topic:
Dominae - what Graphics mod do you use? I really love the Impresionist-esque landscape graphics I see in your posts. I've been checking out everyone's graphics mods and like that one best."These rocks, he thought, are here for me; waiting for the drill, the dynamite and my voice; waiting to be split, ripped, pounded, reborn; waiting for the shape my hands will give them". -Ayn Rand , The Fountainhead
