Why do I write Alternate History? I'm no fan of setting based fiction (SF, Fantasy) but I find a great deal of enjoyment in Alternate History. Why?
I find in Alternate History a chance to redeem some of history's abominations. Over the course of my literary works I have attempted to redeem Adolf Hitler, a Mongol invader and now Jack the Ripper.
We were watching 'From Hell' the other day, well actually I quit watching about halfway through, but I watched a little of it and I started thinking about Jack the Ripper.
He was good at killing people.
So could he have put this talent to good use?
Not in the most peaceful half-century that Europe's ever seen.
So we change things about and make him a General, keeping the name Jack so that people recognise it at the first sight.
I wondered about how to do this in a new way, and so I fell back to a little story I read in the Alt. History Compilation 'Alternate Generals' called "Billy Mitchells's Overt Act," which narrarated the story from newspaper clippings and bits of History books. It was a good alternate history, it told the changes and so forth competently, but it didn't do very well with the character of Billy Mitchell. My character, on the other hand, was fascinating and I wanted my story to be mostly driven on an internal conflict, to see if the 'Ripper' can beat the demons inside of his tortured soul.
So it was a challenge.
Enjoy.
