building cities next to eachother was fun, you could make a megacity! Actually it should wopkr that is you do that then they combine and cool stuff happens.

attacking foreign units before contact was THE THING that I miss. Realistic too.

the copy protect question, why don't people use that anymore?

I miss the random events. And the copy protection questions were funny: "An usurper claims that you're not the true king!" or something like that. Good old days.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

Thing I won't miss about Civ1: my veteran Knight destroys a Mech. Inf. fortified in a city.

I agree about the radnom events, though. Can anyone explain this one: volcano erupts near city without temple and next to a mountain? What's the connection?

And attacking before making contact only worked at sea, is that correct or was it only in Civ2?

I guess I don't understand why anyone has Civ I on the computer, although I did put Civ II back on the computer, but I guess I could dig up Civ I, but then I just don't know why and if I want to do that, since I have other games, that may be on the computer first.

            I miss Napoleon.

I miss the foreign civ's advisors in the negotiation screen.

I miss even more about civ2...cease fires, food caravans, less randomness in battles, good working scenario editor...sigh...

I miss GOOD made City view.

                Only Civ1 made it right.

                Civ2 made it painfull bad.
                Civ3 just made it unfishied.

                P.S.
And animations when you capture the cities.

                  Hey! Come on, people!

What Civ 1 had that no game since has had was great leader animations and dialogue! No PC beating around the bush... and the looks on the advisors' faces in the background can't be beaten!
You can't fight in here! This is the WAR room!

                    from civ1,2

                    pretty looking farms

                    civil wars

                    spies (female) /diplomat units

                    caravans

small music/sound effects: like battle win/loss sound, the short music played accompanying another civ's envoy (eg. "the battle hymn of republic" melody when lincoln wants to talk), the nuke explosion sound when one builds manhattan project, the sirens of nuke being dropped.

to me, its the little things that stay in my head after years...you only appreciate them when u notice civ3 doesnt have them...they DO make a difference...

Yes, I agree. Only Civ1 had a good City View. Even now, ten years later, is better than the curent one.

What about that god-awful sound system, that always wakes up my birds?

Classic games are generally good. But I think we can be glad that they decided to improve Civilization. Later versions, though, became unplayable when you learned how much micromanagement was needed to play correctly.

                          Hint, hint, hint:

But there is one graphic MOD in files forum which tries to fix that.

If the city had a temple, the gods could be appeased by sacrificing some virgins, throwing them into the volcano...
