  • Any Europeans that can play with patch 1.14f?

As it stands now many Europeans (for some reason especially Dutch people, perhaps because the game was available earlier?) are not able to play the game with patch 1.14f. The reason seems to be that the US version uses another brand of copy protection than the European version. If those who have the problem install the patch, the program asks to insert the PTW disk even though it is in the drive.

However there are some(?) Europeans that can play with the patch installed. I am curious to know who can and who can not. If you can did you buy PTW in Europe or are you using the US version?

Does anyone know how one can detect whether you have the US version or not?

To start off: I do have the problem and bought my copy of PTW at Dynabyte on september 29 in the Netherlands (and, yes I also bought the original CIVIII so do not accuse me of using illegal stuff as someone suggested in another thread).

I scanned several bulletin boards and came up with the following results.

............................Able to play............Not able to play
    Netherlands ...............1...............................9
    Belgium......................1.................... ...........1
    UK.............................1.................. .............1
    Germany.....................0..................... ..........3
    Scotland.....................0.................... ...........1

I will have missed some posts of course.

There seem to be a few US players that have this problem too but I suppose that that originates from a different source (which does not make it better for them, of course).

I do not know which versions are used by those who are able to play and expect that there are more people that can (they have no reason to post). I hope this thread will shed some light on these questions.

Maybe I'm the 'able to play Belgian' you listed above. I have a UK Civ3 bought in Belgium and a US PtW ordered from www.gamestop.com. All works well.

Indeed you are but thank you for adding the information that you bought the US PTW version. That seems to explain the fact that you can play it. Lucky you.

I can play. But you might have included me.
Dammit im still using a copied version of the game, until play stop 'packing' my order and actually deliver.

I can only concur that patch 1.14f messes up the macrovision safedisk protection.
            I cannot play with it.

Well, I can still play single-player with the unpatched version.

Does the US version of PTW also have this protection ?

I did indeed imply you. Thank you for posting.

Flandrien: The US version has a different copy protection (securom instead of safedisk). That is where this problem comes from.

I conclude that sofar all of those that can play the game use the US version.

Maybe the use of a NO-CD crack as a temporary fix would be justified in this case. I'm not promoting piracy... but the patch is broken.

Link edited by Ming... It's not how you might plan on using it... It's how others might.

Im not promoting piracy either, but NO-CD cracks are actually very convenient.

                    My Scenario:
Desk covered in papers, books, cups of tea etc etc etc
Finding a CD takes a few minutes, and disrupts your desktop 'organisation'.

I argue that if you purchased the game, there shouldnt be a problem with using these cracks, even though technically they involve reverse engineering code and are against most eulas.

Thanks for the link, statusperfect. I bought my ptw disc at Media Markt in the Netherlands, and patching doesn't work.

If they can't fix it, I don't find any reason why I shouldn't get the no-CD crack. And for the protection of the original CD I prefer the no-CD play, too. I officially bought a copy, so why shouldn't I use that improvement? Especially on a laptop, where the CDs get quite warm and the player gets problems reading them after some time.

Unfortunatly posting that link violates rules of this forums.

So it's pretty possibile that your post will be edited very soon.

And it is not against the rules to sell a product that does not work?

I expect some consideration in these special circumstances.
