The first time you ran GameSpy?

I run 2 computers with 2 IPs. I use one to browse GameSpy and the other as Host for games. The default GameSpy was installed on the host and I activated it at some point, since it now asks me to log in when I start GameSpy. However, it is asking me to update to 1.11b and shuts down when I say no.

I would like to know if it is GameSpy per se, or that version of Arcade. Of course it's useless info sorta. I can't get into Arcade unless I update, so I might as well delete it from the host.

... or is 1.11b a fix from their end?

      Anybody?

like Half Life, Gamespy Arcade needs to die.

If yer doing MP, you might as well go the extra mile and build your own in game broswer.

I'm a bit confused about this : isn't Gamespy only a (very bad ) tool to find other players and launch the game? So once the game is launched, it's just some client-server connections between the players, and there shouldn't be any connection to Gamespy anymore... So why is it slowing the game itself? Does it still run in the background and send stuff to a Gamespy server or something?

Gamespy sucks. It's great news that we can run PtW without gamespy

It will not help lag issues bugs. But it wil lhelp ione of the bigger problems I observed, nobody could get a game started period. I think it has something to do with the two lobbies conflicting with eachother, but that's just a theory.

Gamespy doesn't slow the game to any measure of noticability. (it does run in the background, but shuts off everything except a heartbeat to let Gamespy know youo are playing a game)

GS is apperantly having the same effect as AOLers have had. GS doesnt host the games, its a matchmaking service, so its not "a slow GS server".

What I think is happening is that aphex.exe, part of GS is hogging bandwidth, like older versions of AOL.

At least we have a foundation to lay our hatred against now. Its not totally Infrogames/Firaxis's fault anymore.

it doesn;t help lag issues to uninstall gamespy... those are lag issues.

However, getting a better than 2 player game started, which is a major problem, uninstalling gamespy will help tremendously.... at least until the next patch... maybe.

If you go into the game and play you can start games. You dont need to unistall gamespy to get games started. I have started games with 3 or 4 people but the lag was too much. I have started a lot of 1v1 games and the lag is ok.

And that's the point of this thread - Uninstall GameSpy and you'll have better chance of hosting/playing MP PTW games with more than just 1v1...you should be able to host/play a game w/ 3-4 human players as long as everyone has a low ping.

You guys are wrong about uninstalling gamespy. YOu should all read the statement they realsed here on the same board. Allthough if you open up gamespy arcade it does not even start the game, but if you use the game feature inside which still uses gamespy you can start a game with out crashes.

I did just read gamespy's staement, and I am a bit saddened, they replied to a thread I started at CFC, and yet, it appears they did not even take the time to read what I had posted.

In fact, my intelligence was insulted, as he went on to address how gamespy does not contribute to lag, (which I had already clearly clarified thaT UNINSTALLING IT WOULD NOT HELP lag issues) but did not address the fact that two different programs being used for the same game in the matchmaking process could be having problems, (even though thte techs are the same, something I also already aknowledged...... if he would have read the first post of the thread before he replied

then he went on to say that arcade and the Civ 3 PTW lobby use the same tech, not the same program

It was inattentive damage control. Simple as that.

BTW the problem should be fixed in 1.05 patch, so I hear.
