  • what turnless mode might be like

Reading Firaxis' accounts of their new 'turnless' mode has been interesting, to say the least.

The new turnless mode is the main reason I'm looking forward to PTW. If they get it right, I'll take back all the bad things I said about Firaxis.

    Why?

Because I know first-hand how great a turnless Civ game can be.

    Why is that?

Because I made the first ever "turnless" civ game, months before Civ 3 even came out.

I'm not saying Firaxis took this idea from me - not at all. It's the only logical way to completely eliminate waiting periods in multiplayer TBS games.

So I appeal to you Civ fans, those of you who are interested in the new turnless mode, to try my game, and see the potential for a complete multiplayer turnless civ game.

At the very least you will have a peak at what the new turnless mode might be like, and hopefully you will want to pick up PTW - it will be much better than my game.

There also exists another way to diminish the turn problems in turn-based games and it's simultaneous turns. People are generally taking about the same time to play a turn so it's not bad. Risk II (on computer) is incredibly better than the original Risk for that.

simultanious turns help, but they don't completely eliminate the problem, because it still forces people who finish their turns quickly to wait.

Not that bad, it's maybe even shorter than AI in single player

As jeff morris said it will still be mostly a turn-based game for one example we still use techs in turns. It would be really cool if it was as turnless as starcraft

Wouldn't that be like Age of Empires, though?

I think this problem is fixed in the fact that when you've finished moving all your units and waiting for the othere dude you can still look at tech trees, mess around with building procductions or engage in diplomacy.

when you have your tech selected and all your building orders done, what are you going to do while mr huge civ is still moving his 50+ units?

simultanious moves will never completely "fix" the problem of waiting in TBS multiplayer games.

yes, developing a good simultanious mode helps by allowing the player to do other things while he is waiting and by setting timers for the max amount of time you would have to wait, but it doesn't completely solve the problem.

as i add aircraft and so on to the game, the turnless mode just becomes more and more fun.

for those of you who want to see the game without playing it or even reading more about it, here's a screen showing the latest build (still to be released). shroud is turned off, and it shows several AI players engaged in air and land battles

there are some graphic placeholders are from civ2, yes...
the graphics are in the process of being replaced, in fact most of the graphics in the screen shot have already been changed.
