Engineering should allow normal road movement over rivers. Prior to that, it is assumed that your units must pass a ford in the river, which slows them down.

Actually we had a thread where we went and computed it out based on Civ3's settings. Each square is 330 miles across.

By your estimation the state of New York is only 20 miles across at its widest point.....

I think it really depends on the map you are playing. For example, one tile on a map of the Earth on a Tiny sized map represents a whole lot more land than one tile on a Huge sized map of the Earth.

Remember the Chunnel under the English Channel.

          That is another option.

Also missing from the game are Canals as Wonders - Suez, Panama.

If you start a new game, found your first city, & look at the Demographics, you'll notice that that you only have 900 square miles. Therefore, by doing a little math, you can see that one tile is 10 miles by ten miles. It's the same for all map sizes. Small maps literily represent smaller worlds, & not a real sized world scaled down.

You're right the 330 miles per tile was based on the maximum setting Civ3 allows you to make the map. We had taken the circumfrence of the Earth and divided it by the maximum number of tiles and then double checked it with total surface volume.

So if one tile = 330 square miles at huge, a tile at tiny would be the size of a nationstate.

If this is true for any size map, I would be all for building bridges over one tile of coast. Even though I know it is possible to make a bridge longer than 10 miles, I don't agree that you should be able to do so in the game. I don't think you should be able to bridge more than one tile of coast without it adjoining to some land on the other end. I don't think you should be allowed to bridge over ocean or sea squares.

I agree...it'll look "funny" to have a bridge from South America to South Africa
This space is empty... or is it?

Although it would be cool to be able to build tunnels and be able to attack said tunnels with subs..........
