Dare I suggest, we want new espionage missions.

    But what exactly?

Anyone has ideas for exciting new stuff they didn't implement?

    Assassinate leader ?

    Make unhappy?

Well, while I used espionage (diplomat/spy) in Civ II and in SMAC and I voted for espionage missions (not by units) in Civ III suggestions, I must admit I've found useless espionage in Civ III.

I've used in few occasions, but they are silly expensive, with a low rate of success vs. the high probability to start a war. I mean in real world espionage is not so risky: you can ruin your international reputation, but not start a war for simple information gathering. "Wet operations", as assassinations or destructions of buildings should be a good reason to start a war.

That said, I'll prefer a fine tuning on current model, before starting adding new missions.

I don't have any ideas for new espionage missions...yet...But what I do know is they need to make the risk of being unsuccessful lower!!!
This space is empty... or is it?

And cut the prices in half.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

You can lower the prices and increase the success rate with the editor now.

That's exactly and exclusively what I use it for in Civ3 - prodding some Civ to declare war on me. Keeps my reputation clean and my citizens seem to endure the war longer (is this really in there, or is it just my perception.... what exactly does war weariness depend upon?)

Yes, I know. Still, I would like them to do it, because then we would have a standard to follow, taking multiplayer into account.

The guys at Firaxis have said that they are probably not going to put changes in the game that can be done through the editor unless they discover a major exploit with the default values.

The whole idea of runnign a defensive "mission" rather than funding a certain level of passive defence has always struck me as being silly. The Civ III implementation strikes me as being worse than the Civ II tedium of placing 3 spies in every home city. I get the strong impression that this part was tested as little as the modern era.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

Interesting point, but... er... could you elaborate a bit more? My head hurts.

                        Excellent point

make a constant sum of money to be invested in "homeland security"

I agree with raising the probability and cutting prices.

That "you can do that with the editor" line is stupid. The whole point is having standards playable and widespread. If everyone has different values, it takes all the fun out of competition and ranks.

For sure. You could also could've just lowered corruption in the editor, but it's much more important that they make it as a default.

I vote for a few more missions, but with a slight change to the system. Increase success rates (they succeed so rarely) and cut the price (something I've done in my mod).

Then, give me some very risky missions like bio-terror and something like unhappiness.
