  • Codes of Conduct for PBEM games?

Having given the matter some thought as a friend and I have started a PBEM game, I'm wondering if anyone else out there uses a code of conduct when starting off their PBEM games?

For example, in order to get the game up to the point where you're going to have something to do each turn, our first rule is:
"All players taking part in the game will agree a time to be on-line at the start of the game for a period of X hours"

    Other rules we're considering are:
"Each player shall be allowed one chance to ask for the game to be restarted due to having a poor starting postion. This option will expire for all players after X number of turns."

"Each player shall commit to playing a minimum number of turns a day (most likely 1), unless agreement is reached with the other players for a brief break from the game (to account for holidays etc)."

So does anyone else operate a CoC with the people they play PBEM with?

Generally people play with 24-48 hour rule if they have timelimit with felxibility to extend time if player requests for it.

Also, generally one restart request per player. Although game I am in, we created four games in advance, played one turn and voted for which game to continue.
      :-p

What's the 24-48 hour rule? Can't seem to find any mention of that elsewhere

That you have 24 or 48 hours to play your turn.
Usually it wont do any good even the time is limited, since someone always lags their turns longer, no matter what.

            and no cheating

that should go without saying though

I almost always can get one turn a day at night, if I have recieved the game. But one turn a day might be too strict. Sometimes unexpected things come up. Hey if I pick up a chick, I won't be playing my game . Of course that is not likely...

I second Dissident's 'no cheating' comment.

Specifically, the game is to be loaded though the multi-player screen. (At least until Firaxis comes up with a 'cleaner' system.)

I would also like to see a rule regarding no contact outside of the game (ie e-mail, PM, forums, chats) that would not normally occur in the game.

An example of this came up in the ptw-demo game regarding the trading of mini-maps, before the civs had made contact in the game and before map-making. This is very unrealistic, not within the spirit of the game, and subject to abuse. For example - three players share their start to facilitate early contact, but don't share with the other player(s) in the game.

The question also comes up about diplomatic contact. We have had a lot of that in the ptw-demo game. By rights, it should not have occurred until civs met in the game. But I admit, the with the early excitement in the game, it was hard to contain.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.
