The Cayuga were created to rule the Haudenosaunee, but the leadership of this small tribe was less certain. There was considerable confusion as to who should have primacy; Akigowaneh , the great grandson of Sahwihsdaegeh’s eldest son or Naganyago, the eldest son of Sahwihsdaegeh’s great grandson. Both sides had their supporters but Akigowaneh was a powerfully built man and his personality attracted followers were the uncertainty of his inheritance could not; Naganyago nurtured vengeance against those with whom he could not nurture loyalty.
