Ah, this map is killing me! Just entered Republic, and my empire is about 5% better off
I have no way to catch up in this game

aqua: when i switched (a lot earlier than you) i was in fact worse off than before, mainly because of the extremely expensive units and my ****ty capital location. but with time (and some courthouses), things look better.
but, uhm... why should you never be able to catch up in this game? you're not far behind in any area of the game, have decent land (but no fresh water) and your UU is still the best unit in the game until marines.

Well frankly, it's not hard to work out Sabre. As you say, I have no fresh water. I also have limted grasslands. That means city growth is either 5 or 10 turns. For most cities, if I want growth to be 5 turns, I must use all coastal tiles.....meaning, crap production. If I want production, I must reduce growth to 10 turns (1 food surplus) or no growth at all.
As for the UU.....yes, wonderful, but at 70 shields even my best city will take 6 turns to spit out one Berserker, and that is forgoing any other vitally needed city improvements during that time.
I'm not complaining mind you....just despondent about the limitations of a kindgom without fresh water.

btw, i don't have many grassland tiles either. only when i irrigated the plains (still at it!) did i have 2 food from land-based tiles. and irrigated plains are equivalent to mined regular grassland.
oh, and believe me when i say that i'm relieved that those berserkers cost so much! imagine them being 40s! you would have taken down 2 empires by now
ps: with the ultra-early pyramids you compensate for the slower growth when using mined hills or so...

not too long ago everyone voted this game as one of their favourite as it's tougher and slower than other PBEMs.
and now that we had a month of temporary slowdown, you guys want to stop/withdraw? that would be a shame

No, I won't pullout. I just hate the pace of production and growth. What's worse is, unlike you guys, I have no way of improving the situation for myself.
