    • well good luck with your study group. i also get a buzz from that sort of thing, but don't get much of an opportunity in that regard these days.

i got given the project from hell a month ago. it's modernising Brixton London Underground station. there is about 6 months left until completion, but the previous PM left because he'd basically fallen out with everyone. since taking over, i've had to terminate the main contract as they simply weren't performing. i've had to revamp a badly demotivated project team. i've had to repair the relationship with the client, who thankfully now has a bit of confidence in us to deliver. and to make matters worse, the newly constructed station entrance staircase, which is supposed to be waterproof, is pissing water into the tickethall. we've only just managed to contain the flood, but for a good while there the station was in danger of being closed. we had to divert the water into a new lift shaft (we were just about to commission the lift), and of course this damaged a lot of equipment which has delayed opening of the lifts by about a month. i've had to explain all this to the executive director of LUL and his side kicks. full on!

yes, there is nothing like a burger after a few pints!

      • Wow. Talk about risk management. You can list risks that can happen and people don't really want to discuss/plan for those things because it seems outrageous. But just like clockwork, something happens...

So cost and schedule delays. That's project management. You try to plan to avoid those things, but the reality is that end up dealing with it. Oh, the team dynamics thing is also present in every project. That's why capable PMs are so in demand. And it gives credence to your comment before that a paper certification doesn't tell the whole story about a person's capabilities. Well, it sounds like you have your hands full!

I don't know if we are experiencing a gmail problem again... I didn't receive the save....

          • Yes, our risk register amounts to a 10 page spreadsheet. Some risks are easily mitigated, others we have absolutely no control over, and should they eventuate, there would be major repercussions on cost and programme. All we can do is prepare contingency plans and brace ourselves for the inevitable shower of sh!t that would follow.

It’s always good being in a situation with all the authority and accountability, but very little control!

            -->

ps – I’m not slaughtering the AI.. you’ll see I’m at peace with everyone. In fact, I hereby make it my mission to ensure peace for the rest of the game. Any wars that break out will result in cities being returned to their rightful owner.

            • Hmmm. I don't have the save again. Something strange with gmail again it would seem.

              Can you check and resend?

Glad to hear that the AI is safe and are you saying you would enter into agreement protecting every nation's land on our continent?

              • Bugger I played the save this morning but didn't send.. apologies.

I'm saying that I will protect the AI cities, yes.

                • no problem, you'll send later, I'll play after work. I can hardly complain abou the pace. This is the fastest PBEM, I've ever played in. Doesn't it really help to keep a coherent strategy and thoughts about the game fresh? I find my play in slow PBEMs so poor because I refuse to take notes and I sometimes can't remember what I planned with units, build queues, etc. In two of my PBEMs, my turn comes up 3, maybe 4 times a month at best. We've been playing for a year and we are in 1500 BC. :sigh:

Okay, about the game. I am saying that I will protect any AI city that is worth Japanese protection. Sometimes that may include putting troops into another nation's soverign land. If it is within our sphere of influence, we will not expect Celtic interference. We note that your empire spans coast to coast -- with the western coast being conquered AI cities.

                  • Yeah a fast moving PBEM rocks. Makes things much more exciting too.

No problem with where you keep your troops. But if you attack any of our AI friends, then we celtic 'guardians of the peace' will respond with massive force.

                    • I guess the reasonable thing would be to be scared, but for some reason... I don't sense that emotion within myself.

So, just to be clear. Who are your "AI Friends" Hittites for sure, but Germans and Byzantine? There's no way the Aztecs and Eygptians are, so don't even bothering listing them as Japan wouldn't acknowledge that as a reasonable claim. It would be viewed as a very disingenuous statement.

BTW, we have massive force too.

                      • Hittities and Byzantine are the main ones. I feel rather sorry for Egypt.

Its true that the Aztecs don't like me, neither do the Germans.

As to your 'massive force', it doesn't look very massive when I press F3.

                        • I know. I'm "weak" compared to you. I often wonder how that's calculated. Darn, you found me out.

I feel rather sorry for the Germans and Aztecs. Eygpt had it coming, no need to feel sorry for that lot. Cleopatra was building military stuff -- I had to put a stop to that.

If the AI was smart, they would all be against you. You are number 1 in most things. Well it will be interesting over the next 100 years.

                          • I heard that military strength is calculated on the basis of attack and defense, but not bombards. Not 100% sure on that though.

                            I've sent the save over.

                            • thanks...

You must have a pretty massive military.....and with those military wonders you have, I assume I'll be seeing sooner rather than later...

                              775 to you.
