    • At first the scouts were dismissed, the invading army was huge, it spanned the horizon and crossed mountain ranges, its head and tail would constitute huge forces in their own right, but if lookouts were going to panic and see phantom units all along the western boarder how could the generals develop an effective defense. As the frantic reports continued to mount through out the day they realized that the impossible must be true. The Russians had massed two armies of unbelievable size.

The Pharaoh’s shoulders slumped and fearing he may collapse the generals rose to aid him, but then they saw in his face not despair but relief. The burden of decision had been lifted from his brow. There was no clever deception that could defeat such a foe, there were no fancy words that could save his people. The swarms of invaders craved only blood and it was an appetite that would have to be satisfied one way or another.

          • An Egyptian Fable

Once their was a king who was also an alchemist. Long days and late nights he spent with formulas and incantations experimenting with turning iron into gold. Finally wracked by frustration he called out to the spirits benevolent or not to grant him this power. It was the sort of invitation the devil could never refuse.

“Iron into gold?†asked the devil. “No problem, in return I will of course need your soul.†The king smiled wryly and agreed, for he had no soul. “When you have gathered your iron call me back and I shall turn it all to gold†said the devil tucking the fresh contract away careful not to smudge the ink.

Long days and late nights the king spent gathering the dull cold metal. Husbands and sons were torn from their families and sent into the mines. Spring and fall they dug at the earth until the cavernous mines were bare so he had them dug up the fields and haul out more until he was sure that he had gotten all that their was.

The devil retuned truly impressed. “Now call your people and let them witness your wealth.†When the weary population had gathered the devil commanded them to each grab two handfuls of ore and march east. In each left hand the lump became a helm and in each right a sword and so the husbands and sons once more left their families and march eastward out of the kingdom of tears into the bright dawn of the golden kingdom to the east.

There they trampled abundant farmlands into mud, they set beautiful cities afire and they massacred peaceful people. When it was all done they returned their plunder to the king and bestowed upon him all manner of wealth. For a short time he was happy.

When the king finally died the devil took him for a walk through his kingdom, he had not left the palace since that first visit so long ago. He walked through the dilapidated towns devoid of commerce except for a few armorers and sword smiths, but these few shops where filled with beautiful golden statues adorned with the images of the east. The fields were overgrown by now, but the people could still buy imported food with gold coins inscribed with the language of the east. The ramshackle homes were filled with sorrow and golden ornaments that reflected the skills of the east.

The new king spent long days and late nights with his advisers and their schemes trying to rebuild the kingdom. Finally wracked by frustration he called out to the spirits benevolent or not to grant him this power. It was the sort of invitation the devil could never refuse.

                      • The Russians again seem to be impervious to catapults.

After witnessing the massacre at Pi-Ramesses, the good people of Byblos flee their homes and abandon their city.

                            • Clearly the Russian offensive has stalled. Each day that passes with the Russian forces confined to their fortified encampments the Egyptian forces grow stronger and more organized. But all is not well with the Egyptian Generals. Heated discussions and argument erupt over how deep into Russian territory the counter offensive should go, and which conquered cities should be renamed after which general.
