I still use a single save file for all my games, and it works just fine. It takes awhile for the file to open initially, but once ther, no problem. I then rely on good naming conventions to keep the games in order. And oh yes - a magic spreadsheet with all the info.
All that being said, I would be keen to see what you are proposing.
