  • Save Game Folder

I would like some help managing my save game folder.

1 - It would seem a sub-folder for each game is the only way to go and just suck up the extra click. I thought of having the saves just overwrite each other, but if everybody does this and a mistake should happen there would be no way to save the game.

2 - So how do you clean up the mess? Just toss out the whole folder and start over each month or so, or delete old saves individually? A desktop shortcut helps a little.

3 - Is there a faster way to save games to the folder from emails? I “save to disk” and end up having to click all the way into the save folder, if I use a shortcut the file name is lost and I have to type it back in. I’ve found “save attachment” to be a little faster.

I have all PBEMs in the save folder - I didn't separate them. Instead, all the SP games (including succession games) got their own folders. Old saves get thrashed every now an then, leaving 2 last turns (received, and sent). I usually ask people to give them correct names (game name, game date), so the mess isn't that bad (sort by name).

Found no solution for the clicking when saving the files. Getting a separate PBEM e-mail, and a separate PBEM mail program (they usually remember the last folder files were saved into) seems like overkill. Of course, if you don't get many non-PBEM attachments, your one mail client should do the trick just fine.

What I did, was setting up filters, so that all e-mails with PBEMs, and PBEM-related stuff are separated from my normal mailbox. It makes things a bit easier.
    Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

I've found a few extra clicks only wastes a few seconds of my time, but sending the wrong file slows down the whole game for everyone. I've created a sub-folder for each game and an 'in' folder in each of those. clicking through the hierarchy seems just as fast as picking through a pile of random saves, and I've yet to send the wrong turn since rearranging this way.

I periodically delete all incoming saves except the most recent, but save the last few outgoing ones to do single-click renames on.

Thanks everybody. The extra folders really are the way to go. It's something I should have done right from the start. It seems like lots of work, but I think now that it saves time. Thanks for the help.

One thing I'm trying: POPFile, which is a variant of a spam-catching program that is able to not just filter based on SPAM/NOTSPAM but based on any category you choose.

It's a GPL Bayesian Filter program that you "train" to filter messages into various folders by telling it which messages go where. At first it sucks - as you don't give it any initial criteria - but (in theory) it gets to 98% or more accuracy.

www.getpopfile.com is the web addy for the program.

I'm trying it out now - so far not enough info to tell if it will work, but it might help filter the various saves into folders especially for those of us with too many games to keep track of correspondence etc.
