Question: In communication with another tribe without an embassy, can you mention a technology you don't already possess? (1-2a). I thought you could not (otherwise you can coordinate research), but I suspect people are doing it.

I guess it is unavoidable sometimes.

An example from single player. When you are the first to research a tech, the AI will often offer good prices for it. Sometimes though, even rich civs will only offer you a fraction of its worth. The reason is simple, they are researching it themselves and are almost done. They will not pay you more than it will cost to finish it themself.

If someone offers a tech I am almost done working on myself, I prefer to tell them why i won't pay much for it rather than just tell them 'no'.

Not to mention that while a statement like "I'm almost done researching 'sliced bread' now" May be against the rules the effect are minute.

Unless you add "I'm going for 'sandwich making' next". Then we're talking research cooperation.


@Alexman, did you start this aggression frenzy this early because the rules outlaw alliances until they can be declared in-game?

My interpretation of the etiquette is that in general, one should not be discussing techs one does not have.

I do accept Bongo's point however, that it is reasonable to say "I didn't accept that trade because I'm researching it myself", but I don't believe it's acceptable to extend that by saying "because I only have 3 more turns to go on it". Otherwise the other player may get the impression that the first player does not want to trade with him.

Generally agreeing to co-operate in research is also fine, but planning which techs each of you will research is unacceptable before an embassy is established.

But I'm sure Rommel will come along very soon and knock us all back into shape

The letter of the code is that such a tech can't be offered or requested in a deal, the intention being to curb coordinated research. Bongo's example, refusing a tech by explaining that it is already being researched, doesn't violate either of these aspects. Mentioning research times seems shady, but not explicitly wrong.

The only problems would be telling another player what you are researching if it has not already been brought to the table as an offering, or mentioning a tech that isn't being researched at all yet.
