  • Will There Be a Macintosh Port of Civ III?

    Everyone:

Just what the subject line indicates. And my apologies in advance if this is a tired, old question that's been answered already. My rudimentary search turned up nothing.

Will there even be a PC version of Civ3?

    *grumbles about supposed 2002 date*

**ROTFLMAO** Yeah, I read about that after posting my own query. So it appears both PCers and Mac lovers are in the same boat this time around.

We wouldn't do it in-house, so it's up to the publisher (as usual). There was a Mac version of SMAC but not one of SMG, so who knows.

I would seriously consider it if it were up to me.Sales of Mac Civ series have been good. With the tremendous sales of imacs and new G systems, there is a decent market.
Just about every mac owner I know has at least 1 copy of a Civ game.
The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

Jeff, any late breaking news about a Mac version (either classic or OS X) of Civ3? I've been reading that the coming OS X will make it easier for developers to create and support multiple versions for Windows, OS X and Unix/Linux platforms. Any comments? Do you think letters of support (a la Mech Warrior) to Hasbro Interactive would help the decision to release a Mac version?

                  Jeffrey Morris:

I would snap up a copy of a Mac-ported Civ III the instant I could get my hands on it. That is a promise and one, I believe, many Macintosh owners would freely give. Civ I, Civ II and Civ III are, IMHO, the best strategy games I have ever simply encountered (or will encounter).

So Cy, how do you really feel? I think that you speak for all the Mac-Civers on ACS!!! Heck, Mac users are even willing to pay money for half-baked "betas" (OS X and Civ2 MPG)!!! I GUARANTEE that we would sprint out in mass to lay down green backs for Civ3! Release lease it as beta and we'll play it for a year while Brian Neese from MacSoft writes the patches! Remember that for Mac-addicts, it's not a computer, it's a religion!!

It's been awhile since I asked the obvious question, so I thought I'd pose it again to see if there is any news. Anybody know anything?

Now with OS X coming on Mar 24th, I think that an OS X and Linux port would be more feasible. "It could happen!"

On the off chance that a rumor appears, would someone kindly post a note in the Civ2-Mac Forum and let me know? Thanks.

My first contact with Civ (Civ1) was on a Mac! And I LOVED it.
I hope I can experience this again.

In addition all newer Macs are shipped with GeForce2 MX Graphics chips. So I guess making lots of 3D thingies shouldnt be a problem.
But I dont think you will use OpenGL wont you?

BTW, there is a quite good Multiplatform (Win, Linux, Mac) Graphics, Input, Network,... Library available: SDL
I dont know the URL, but its quite good.
Loki has produced their Linux port of Call To Power with it.
SDL is available under LGPL (any modification to the libraries must be made public available, but it can be commercially used) IIRC.
