        i thought:
        astronomy --> galleys on sea tiles
        navigation --> galleys on ocean tiles
        magnetism --> galleys on ocean tiles

        because navigation is an optional advance, magnetism (usually the last tech i research (except maybe ToG) in the medieval era) has the same modification

            Quite early in this thread I posted that I make ocean impassable to galleys. This has not come back to haunt me in my current game. It is 800AD. I am stuck on an isolated continent (with 15 cities though, not bad on a standard map) and am just researching the last ancient era techs. However the Mongols just built Leo's! Contact with the rest of the civs is going to be interesting.

            Basically it is quite possible to seriously restrict galleys but occasionally there is a price to be paid.
            Never give an AI an even break.
