OK, I've tried to hold this off, but it's been 2 weeks +4 hours since the original announcement, and nothing's happened. What's going on?

No, in Australia we don't live with kangaroos and koalas in our backyards... Despite any stupid advertisments you may see to the contrary...

Maybe he meant "very soon" by Civ standards: 1 turn = 1 year

Damn it, you could be right!

Likewise - I think if we do it anymore often, we'll bring down their server...

"Real Soon Now" is probably a Firaxis internal joke on us...

The following what was posted at gamecenter.com and perhaps the source of the 2002 'rumour'.

            quote:

What We Want to See: Civilization III
Hasbro Interactive announced Civilization III with great fanfare at last year's E3. Unfortunately, that was probably a bit premature. Civ
III is going to happen; however, it's a safe bet that the project won't see the light of day until 2002. One problem is that Firaxis is
committed to developing its dinosaur game for EA before it can fully concentrate on Civ III. The other, much larger issue is the mass
defection of talent--including Civilization II and Alpha Centauri designer Brian Reynolds--to Big Huge Games. The good news is that,
with Reynolds's departure, Sid Meier is actually going to design Civ III. The bad news: we're gonna be waiting a long, long time.

That quote IS the source of the 2002 rumour - I started it and linked to it from a few threads.

It's a little bit ironic how "A quick CivIII bit to put your minds at ease" and actually made us all more restless, eh?

Well, when you're a game designer working on a project that takes multiple years then `Real Soon Now' IS several weeks or a month.

On the otherhand, when you're an overly eager fan then `Real Soon Now' is about fifteen minutes. TOPS.

My bet would be that we'll see something in early to mid-October. Now, um... if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go check the Firaxis web-page again...

You will notice that Firaxis said "we never said the release date would be in 2002" he didn't indicate whether it would be 2001 or 2003.

Of course, he didn't deny 2002 either.

Three weeks after "real soon" they could at least tell us exactly when.

Hmmm, maybe the release of CTP2 will speed things up. If they keep delaying and CTP2 is any good at all, many civ 2 players will migrate across. I'm certainly going to buy CTP2 if the players' review are good.

Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. Your secret is safe with me.

Same here - the only reason I didn't get CTP was that the mags in general thought it wasn't very good.

edit: maybe those bunch of people left Firaxis, all the web-designers left as well - just a thought.

For those of you concerned about the site launch:

I'm sure you can all understand that there is a great deal of discussion and coordination that has to happen before we can open the site. There are a lot of people involved (including many folks from Hasbro) who are just making sure everything is copacetic before we go public with the site.

Please also keep in mind that as this will be a "preview site", we will be doing our best to address your questions and tell you what we can of the game, but it is not going to be the be-all, end-all of Civ sites by any means.

Just bear with us, the first step is always the hardest =)

                            As for this comment:

I think I can safely debunk that rumor =)

Now can we all stop bashing Firaxis!
They are going to give us a great game. It is hard but we need to be patient (especially me!) It would be nice if they could snap their fingers and out popped a game but it doesn't work that way. (I sometimes wonder if Sid ever wishes he could make a game just by snapping his fingers!) It takes time.

I am very happy with Dan's latest update. I am extremely excited about the preview site and for civ3.

now if I could just find something to do while waiting for civ3...

'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Well, I hope our suggestions helped out with the design step... Can't wait until Civ3....

So, can you tell us if it uses a unit workshop model?
