is it possible to upgrade all units of one kind of infantry or military unit at the same time?? or do you need to rigorously send them to cities with barracks and individually upgrade them all?

Shift + U will do the trick. Only requirement is that the unit is in a city with barracks at the time.

You still have to send indivdual units in a city with barracks. When you shift-U, the price required will be for all units of the same type located in barracked cities.

I think they will need movement points as well.

Not in my experience; only one needs movement points left. I've moved units into cities, expending all their movement points, and then used another unit with movement available to perform the shift-U. All of the units upgrade, those with and those without movement points remaining.

I believe you are right, but it works ONLY with Shift-U used from the F3 screen. IMHO, this is a small bug and it was not meant to be so, as you are not able to upgrade individual units when they run out of movement points.

I don't use the F3 screen. If you have an active unit in a city with a barracks and do shift-U, it upgrades all the units of that type, movement or no. Perhaps it is a bug, but I'm happy to keep it.

another thing that's good to know is that you can select any of the unit you want to upgrade and hit a shift-U on it, even if it's not in a barracked city. ie. you have a bunch of spearman in cities that are barracked but the only one left with movement points is not in a barracked city. shift-u that unit and the ones that ARE in barracked cities will be upgraded. this is true at least in vanilla civ3, I don't have PTW so I can't speak for that.

Correct, I did not realize you could initiate the mass upgrade from outside the F3 screen. Basically, you need an appropriate unit that still has some movement points left... as long as you have such, you are able to mass upgrade all units of that kind (as lateralis points out, even if you have you last "moveable" unit outside any barracked cities).

I had NO IDEA that you could do upgrades/mass upgrades from the F3!

Yes, but if you have any elites that you want to hold back from upgrades, it is hard to tell from the F3 screen who is who.

I agree that it should be possible to keep those elites out (and maybe some others too, like a city in the middle of your country and you are a bit low on cash)
