That was the last time I saw one was about 117 patch. I tend to not use much water though, so I would have less chances.

Saw it only once, but they didn't attack me (I had Ironclads IIRC).
Does the AI consider relative strength of the units?
At least they dont do it in land wars

Am I the only one who thinks, after reading this thread (and several others), that inter-continental warfare against other humans in PtW will be an extremley challenging/fascinating/rewarding experience?

Professor Plum: Yes, but now I work for the United Nations.

I agree. I think we'll see some strategies never used before against the AI.

There is a dirty trick you can do with privateers. Stack them on top of your ironclads or battleships and see the enemy ships attack you and get sunk in peacetime. I don't know if it has been fixed in 1.29 though.

                It's probably very true!!

I totally agree with you, but I don't think there will be great use of privateers in MP

Or maybe just to make everyone suspicious on another

Privateers could be usefull in MP. People wil be less willing to go full out for war. So privateers do offer an alternative
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the AI ALWAYS know the location of other civs units? And doesn't this mean that the AI also will know who own those privateers?

bongo, I think thats why the AI knows it's your privateer. I don't use them anymore because the AI knows too much and attacking their privateers pisses them off. It's a shame, because it's a great idea badly played out.If they were able to take on more then a transport, they would be cooler.

I definatley hope that in MP they will have a black flag, otherwise it would all be useless. In MP there actually may be a point to using them.

As you said : A great idea badly played out. Why restrict the idea to ships BTW? Financing guerilla unit inside enemy territory would be cool.

Privateers need fixing, what if the AI had 10-20% change of finding out who owns a privateer?

                            geurilla units? Right on!

but they would have to have a large upkeep to work undercover in enemy territory, and also be balck flagged. Maybe this should work in connection with a spy.

I laways thought that such units should be controlled by the computer, as they are not totally under the sovereign nations control. That you could only give vague orders (like attack around here).

Barbarians exist in the game already, so why not upgrade their weapons and include the possibility to make deals with them like 'we give you 20GPT to attack and harras the zulus'

There are a bunch of threads about "hidden nationality" and "submarine" land units that we tried out in earlier versions of the game. They were an interesting mod. Search under colourless or colorless.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI
