I usually use names such as 12th Grenadiers, 2nd Fusaliers, or 7th Royal Lancers etc etc. I do it because many of the modern European militaries have units that have been around for hundreds of years and, unless they had one of those nasty socialist revolutions, still retain the name as a matter of pride.

I'm rather boring with my naming convention for units, they all follow the same naming standard

      1st Guards X
      2nd Guards X
      etc..

where X = identifies the type of unit it is.

So I get units called 1st Guards Legion, 4th Guards Cavalry, 12th Guards Armour, etc...

        My names kind of suck.

For example, I'll name a great leader "bob" or "joe" or "phil"

BTW, does anybody know the significance of naming GL unit's. what if it get's killed before you can use the GL?

I don't mind losing them. They die gloriously in battle, always at the front lines.

Mind generally get named along the lines of :-
            Finally
            At last
            About F***ing time
Where were you when I missed the pyramids
            Patience

The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

If it's swordman, legionnaire or immortal, the first one will be Lintamacil (swift sword). me After that, characters from LOTR and Silmarillion e.g. Glorfindel, Turin Turambar, Eomer, Faramir.

I take two things into accout when naming my units: the name of the leader the unit produced, and the age in which the leader was produced. For example, Barbaraossa's Legion.

Here's an age by age breakdown.

                          1) Ancient
                          (Blank's) Legion

                          2) Medieval
                          (Blank's) Crusaders

                          3) Industrial
                          (Blank's) Regiment

                          4) Modern
                          (Blank's) Division
                          "Terminate, with extreme prejudice"

These are interesting ideas people, but they will be strained when you get 55 leaders in one game lik I did.

I name them MacRider, MacRider2, MacRider3, MacCavalry, etc.
It's not the scottish Mac, it's something else, I can't explain (too long and too OT)

I consider them some kind of Imperial Guard so after they become obsolate I usually move them in the capitol and keep them there for the rest of the game!

Well, with 55 leaders in a game this could be a problem ...

55 leaders in one game? *jaw hits floor* I don't think I've gotten 55 leaders total in all games I have played....
None, Sedentary, Roving, Restless, Raging ... damn, is that all? Where's the "massive waves of barbarians that can wipe out your civilisation" setting?
