Deity... nothing else. The key is constant tech trading and brokering. I easily find myself sometimes an age behind, but somehow, I always manage to come back around industrial age. Check the strategy forums...

I think its because the intensive AI tech trading. They tend do that a lot and, for your safe, it's better you do the same with them, cause is almost impossible just research alone without trade tech and stay ahead in tech race, at least on more dificult levels.
The rate of AI tech trade is exposed in editor with patch v1.29, you can lower it, but i think you should try to be more diplomatic as you can, trading techs with them.
Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

          Emperor.

          BulMaster, check out this thread:

            Monarch.

I'm usually slightly behind the AI in the tech race, but generally only until the industrial age. Until then I build on culture and try to flip cities. After entering the industrial age I focus on production and military, and then try to start some puppet wars. Sometimes, because of this, the most powerful civ is the first that gets eliminated!

Great thread Theseus i will consider using some of those ideas. Still i think the game needs more realistic adjustments!!! Like i read somwhere that an AI sended a starship in 1500 AD no comment on that Well i will hope to play one versus you guys when PTW is out !!!!

Last three games have been on Emp/Deity, but I prefer Monarch.

                  Monarch and Emperor.

I played up to Emperor as a builder/opportunist. Since 1.29f I been going the warmonger route for a change. I just started my first game on emperor as a warmonger. Playing the Chinese as I did with my previous game on Monarch. Those Riders sure are better than knights.

You might want to try playing with accelerated production turned off. That is the most likely reason that tech is going so fast in your game. My bet is you are also not using your workers as well as you need to keep up with the AI now that you are playing with a handicap. Don't automate your workers till late in the game. The workers will go around irritating far more of the grasslands than is good. Those tiles need mines for production not irrigation which will drive your population up faster than you can manage happiness in many cases. Maybe you can get away with that with accelerated production turned on, haven't tried it because it distorts the time scale.

If you have your cities under the control of the the governors that too will hurt. After all the AI is using the governors and has a production advantage. You have to use YOUR brains not the AI's if your going to beat the AI while you have a handicap. Only you can know what your long term plans are and its long term thinking that is your biggest adavantage over the AI besides using the workers better.

I feel bad... I was always at Prince level in Civ1 and 2, but in Civ3, I have mostly played at Warlord. It's getting a bit too easy, but I have had problems with adjusting me to Regent difficulity. I don't know what's wrong... Any advise to give?

                    Oh, I feel really novice...

BTW, I'm usually a peaceful builder, if I don't have to go to war for keeping my place in the world.

Diety mostly, Emperor occasionally. Keep up in techs via conquest/exploitation.

                              I play monarch.
Before moving up to emperor I am trying to beat monarch with all 16 civs.
