It was a close call between ancient and medieval, but I voted medieval. The middle ages are where they separate the proverbial men from the boys. The improvements:

    cathedral
    university
    bank

    The units:

    pikemen
    knights
    musketmen
    longbowmen
    cavalry
    caravels
    galleons
    frigates
    privateers
    explorers
    The wonders:

    Sun Tzu
    Sistine
    Leos
    Bach
    Copernicus
    Adam Smith
    Magellan
    Newton
    Shakespears (not that I bother)

Though the ancient age is clearly the key to the game, it's in the medieval age where the game can be "put away." If you do well in ancient times and then manage to build most of the medieval wonders, you're all set. There is just so much to do in the middle ages, and I often play civs with medieval UU's (Japan, China).

The industrial age is ok, with all the production improvements and the joys of MPPs The modern age... well, I almost never get there. The game is over by then. Modern Armor is a great toy, though.

I voted for Ancient, 'cause in a way that's where I have the most fun (the excitement of discovery, and the critical nature of every decision), but Arrian's right in a way, there's is so much more to do in Medieval.

Is it OK to say any age in which I can go to war??
The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

        what arrian said
at least in the middle ages you arent just waiting and waiting until tanks before you can attack, you've got knights and cavalry. Also, like he said, the knight replacement UU's give you a real fun boost with a GA

I like the ancient age. Because it is very important to have a good start. If you mess up here, you can never make up for it later. I must admit it works the same in most games, but the results are different. I usually try to get swordsmen fast so that I am able to gain territory the hard way!

In the Middle ages you should have had a good ancient age. Here you build upon that. Trying to keep up a bit on the tech level, trying to get the AI's to fight each other and perhaps capture a few cities of them. In the meantime building up units and buildings. Wonders are mostly already built, so it is no use trying to build them.

In the Industrial age is where you wage war. If by this time you haven't been able to keep up on tech, you will get your ass kicked....

Modern age is where the wars are usually already fought. It is just a matter of time before the biggest and most advanced civ will win. Occasionnaly you have two big superpowers or even more that will fight each other in this era, but usually it is just a boring end of an exciting game. The only reason to finish it is that you want your score registered....

My favorite age was 13 because I could still listen to Mötley Crüe and not get strange looks...

Maybe the IA is more decisive for me because I am always the Germans, and the Panzer allows me to be a force to be reckoned with in the late IA.

Middle Ages followed closely by Industrial.

The middle ages always seem to be where the games become most "fun", by the industrial ages, the game ussually seems to be decided.

                          BEFORE tanks

i love an infantry war (with artillery of course)

fun to watch the AI bounce cavalry off of my front lines too

Yeah, but Panzers come at the same time as tanks.
