I got sick of Earth due to excessive Civ II play. I stick to random maps, usually moderate water, continents, 4 bil, warm, wet...
To us, it is the BEAST.

I sure wish Firaxis had included a decent map editor with Civ 3.
To us, it is the BEAST.

I don't like Earth too much. Maybe when we've got more Civs to fill places and set-starting locations. So we can have America/Iroqois/Incans/Aztechs to fight each other, then the various European/Asian/African civs to fight each other also. In Civ3 whoever ended up in North America usually was pretty powerful because of all that land they controlled alone.

Besides, I like the random maps. My favorite settings are:

Continents, The first and second water settings(80%, 70%?), Normal, Temperate, and 5 billion. Usually makes for a decent amount of land masses with good terrain for everyone.

Random. Seems more realistic. I also don't like the lack of set starting positions, I find it really annoying.

Less tundra and deserts, which can't really be improved much.

More jungle, that, although a pain in the butt, can be improved.

Resoources tend not to be localized. Better chance for everyone to get what they need.

Also, 5 billion years tends to make more hills than mountains.

Maps of Europe are my favorite, specifically Aanar and Norm's.

I love the map of Earth...though I never play it, since it takes ages...just to finnish one turn...The Earth map is a little too large to be played on my computer
This space is empty... or is it?

I play random maps; I enjoy the sense of discovery. Plus I think the random map generator in Civ3 is excellent.

Since I played Earth exclusively in Civ 1, and mostly in Civ 2, I am now on to Random.

On Earth, you know where you start, and you know the geography around you - you're mainly exploring for the huts, not to get an idea of where are you. You know where to send ships and so on... not too good. On Random, however, it's all a mystery, where the others are, are you on an island or on a huge continent.

Random. I haven't even played Earth yet on CivIII. I played it to often on CivI and CivII.

My favourite fixed map was the "Rome scenario" included with CivII. I bet I played that more than the game itself
