  • Dumb diolouge

I wish the NPC's in Civ3 acted less stupid all the time. The stuff the other civs say are really dumb and childish, and your advisors are not helpful, actually I hate some of them cause all they do is make faces at me while I'm talking to other leaders. In Civ2 there was a sense of grandness in the diolouge, esspecially that Zulu chick . I want the feeling of vastness and power, not some head making wisecracks.

Check the diplomacy.txt file, and you'll see everything everyone says in every situation in the diplomacy screen. I think there might be a tutorial on diplomacy.txt somewhere (I can't seem to find it). Armed with this knowledge, you can make them say anything you want them to, and restore that good old sense of grandness in the dialogue.

Anyway, they added the childish aspect of what they say for the purpose of reminding us all that it is just a game.
"Corporation, n, An ingenious device for obtaining individual profit without individual responsibility." -- Ambrose Bierce
"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." -- Benjamin Franklin
"Yes, we did produce a near-perfect republic. But will they keep it? Or will they, in the enjoyment of plenty, lose the memory of freedom? Material abundance without character is the path of destruction." -- Thomas Jefferson

"No! Under no circumstances! No, no, no! Thousend times no!"
      (Tokugawa)

      What is childish about that?

"You're a good bootlicker. Keep up the good work."
        - Bismarck

"Have you come to admire my beauty or is there a purpose to your visit?"
        - Catherine

"I will sacrifice fifty warriors in honour of our friendship."
        - Montezuma

"I'm as poor as a blind drunkard at a poker game."
        - Lincoln

And it all goes on. Now you try telling me HONESTLY that those aren't childish.

Not that I complain about it, since it really adds that touch to the game that reminds us that is IS a game.

Considering the fact, that most of the leaders (and advisors too) are implemented as clowns, their statements fit very well in this picture. I'm having a lot of fun when I read their replies, and yes, it reminds me that all is a game. Civ3 has not much fun toys, so let us enjoy this one.

Amen. And as I said, if anyone can't possibly enjoy it for what it is... there's the diplomacy.txt file. Go fix it to satisfy your own whims.

I think all that junk is kind of funny . But yeah, it is kind of stupid.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Yes, the leaders are made as clowns, which I like, but the advisers are not clowns. They always just say "Build more cities, build more tanks, etc.", nothing funny here...and usefull? Not really! Specially when in the cultural screen, they sometimes say "The admire us", while the face of the adviser is sad!?! Have also seen the same thing in the military adviser screen, where he says "The 's strongest unit is the pikemen", while I'm using tanks (Or at least a unit much stronger than their strongest unit...)

Anyway, back to topic. I really like the funny dialoge of the leaders, it makes the game more fun to play...
This space is empty... or is it?

I KNOW it's a game, but I like to pretend it's not. I mean, when you build a huge civilization or overrun an empire you want to feel like it is real, even if you know it's a game.

Actually I like the leaders and advisors the way they are. It kind of gives the feeling that I have so much power that I can laugh about everyone else (or even my own) problems
                    My favorite line:
The so and so have been destroyed
                    o Good, they deserved it!

I won't try to explain my humor, just take it as it is.
Est-ce que tu as vu une baleine avec un queue taché?
If you don't feel the slightist bit joyful seeing the Iraqis dancing in the street, then you are lost to the radical left. If you don't feel the slightest bit bad that we had to use force to do this, then you are lost to the radical right.

What are you all expecting? They couldn't get Shakespeare as a writer.

                        You could change this yourself...
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Is there really one out there, who reads the BS the advisors say? The only useful information I get from them is "This deal will probably be acceptable", period. What makes them clowns, are their unhappy faces. They are hilarious. Especially, when Science-Sid says, that he lacks funds. Or that military guy, when he reports a declaration of war between other civs. Somehow I'll have to teach him to wear his helmet properly.

They're nice, but they by far not so good like the advisors in Civ2. Hell, how I miss them. They were completely useless, but as often as I have seen them, I still enjoy them.

Give me more soldiers, noble leader ... I disagree, your excellency! ... Pah!

i couldn't agree more, who wants Alexander the Great wisecracking in slang? for me the atmosphere in Civ is very important.

the diplo file is huge and it would be a big undertaking to alter it

Maybe you should use this thread to recruit people to do another 'Poly project : "making diplomacy.txt grandiose" or something.
Personnaly, I like diplomacy.txt the way it is, esp. when Bismark tells me I'm a good bootlicker... I'll always punish him for this 4000 years later
But I understand you don't like it this way, so I think you (and other people who want greatness) should try to work together on this.
