  • Planes can't sink ships, DEAL WITH IT

Its unfair when you can sink a battleship with 3 or 4 bombers. If you people seriously want to be able to sink a ship with air then ships deserve anti-air weapons because that is what they have in real life.

I have seen an ironclad beat a battleship with even hps. You have a serious problem if you complain that you can knock a galley down to 1 hp and not have a single ship to sink it!

Look, air cannot sink ships and it will never be able to. Its for decent game balance and it won't allow air to become too powerful.

Save space for good threads if you only want to complain about a good balance rule anyway. Take it to Civfanatics but don't trash Apolyton with it.
    Wrestling is real!

    Is this for real?

Care to explain that to the Japanese navy after Midway?

Of course, I have to agree with your other comments about the passive nature of Aegis Cruisers while they are being blown to 1 hp by piston engined bombers.

They should implement 'counter-bombard' if bombardment is made to be able to sink ships.

Why shouldn't modern combat ships (from DD) be able to shoot back like a city with Sam facilities? The occurance of a bomber being wounded or shot down is rare. At least the Navy wouldn't be so offended while playing with the navy in civ3.

Didn't the programmers include an AEGIS cruiser unit in Civ III? Those ships in Civ II were able to fend off air and missile attacks quite handily in Civ II. Of course, every other naval unit in Civ II was somewhat vulnerable to air and missile strikes — although it took 2 to 6 missile/bomber strikes to sink a battleship — but not the AEGIS cruiser.

All ships are vulnerable to air strike. That is true in Civ2 and in real life

And all air planes are vulnerable to surface to air missiles. That is true in life, but not from Aegis Cruisers in Civ3.

Dammit, now I'M whinning. What's that black spot over there?

If anybody has questions on this topic, I would like to refer them to the definitive movie on the issue, the most scholarly and informative war movie ever made:

                Pearl Harbor

                Yin's Mini-Review:

This masterpiece of hyper-realistic history manages to take the iron grit and sacrifices of war and lovingly craft them into a tale as grand as the human heart ... but with a beat no time could ever hope to still. If you see just one movie about some hot nurses and hopping in bed with your best friend's gal: This is it!

Ships should be able to damage and destroy planes. But also planes should be able to sink ships. This is stupid of cource planes can sink ships and ships can detroy planes.
This should have been in the game and not left out, because they wanted to use the same code for all units (Sea and Land)
However I do agree that planes should not be able to detroy armies/land units

I don't want to get into it here. Well of course I do.

I really get into navy stuff.

But what I think he's trying to say is there really is no point in making planes be able to sink ships. This only covered a brief period in history.

But during ww2, there were no anti-aircraft guns fast enough to effectively knock down many opposing aircraft. It could be done, but as the Japanese proved, it can't be done effectively.

But when modern armaments like the phalanx gatling gun and sea sparrow launchers came about, along with fundimental shifts in warfare and world superpowers, there is little chance of planes sinking ships today. For the reasons cited above.

So for the purpose of the game, I'm happy bombers can't sink ships. Although it would be nice to have specialized units like dive bomber and torpedo bomber. But then you would need to have advances or special naval units to render them obsolete. This is not a super easy task.

I like the fact that air units cannot sink ships. Game balance.

The only thing that annoys me is that ships are FASTER then air units.
When ship moves 5 or 6 tiles, I need to rebase my air units and hope that maybe they won't move out of range again.

                            P.S.
Carriers are helpfull to acheve this goal.
And other ships are helpfull in destroying enemy 1hp ships.

So air and land bombardmant can't kill ships eh?

Tell that to the sailars on HMS Sheffield when 1 Exocet missile sank it in the Falklands.

Bombardment should be able to sink ships. This is a must.

On the other hand all modern ships should have an intercept chance to shoot down fighters.

Once you get rocketry, then only an AEGIS cruiser (and fighters onboard an aircraft carrier of course) should have an intercept chance.

All ships should be sinkable by land bombardment.

Also a ships move rate should be severely reduced when it's down to 1HP.

                              That's my two cents,
