I uninstalled it after about two weeks. Too linear, some bad game concepts, and not any improvement over Civ 2 IMO in most areas where it's not worse. Worst of all, it tends to be dull.

yup, civ 3 is an ok game, but it doesn't have the staying power of civ2 IMO....time will tell if the mp part of the game is worth it or not, but at this point, i give it a pretty big thumbs down...and it doens't have that one more turn feel to it

It is still the ONLY game I play, 20+ hours per week.

I played Civ I 3 times as much as all the contemporary games combined.

I played Civ II 10 times as much as all its contemporaries combined.

I play Civ III about twice as much as its contemporaries. The gap between it and my 2nd favorite, Empire Earth, is damn big. But the gap between CivII and the other games of the time was colossal.

Its all about preference. I stopped playing Civ3 after about a month. No reason other than i prefer CtP1/2 because i can change almost everything. I can even make the combat system annoyingly random. (and have done so before)

I play as much as I can.

Over a year later.... I don't even CONSIDER playing anything else. In RL, I had spent a couple of years starting to learn how to play Go. Haven't touched a stone in 2002.

All you guys who dropped it like a hot potato don't know what you've been missing. The patches have been VERY significant (let's not get into that whole argument, please).

Civ3 1.29 and PTW 1.14 (as well as the latest AU Mod) are like nothing you've ever seen. A number of the most proficient Strat forum players have actually had to decrease difficulty level to deal with it.

So, yeah, I'm still a major fan.

I don't play it nearly as much as I'd like to, mainly because of RL constraints, but... I consider it a good game. Fun, interesting and sufficiently varied (esp. now with PTW), but it is not a classic.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

I originally bought the game for MP. I thought MP would be there shortly (what a stupid mistake ) after SP so I bought the original game the day it arrived in the stores. Nonetheless, I had many many hours of fun playing SP especially after the second patch. After a year it got boring but now MP is out and I am looking forward to have many hours of fun again trusting Firaxis will fix the current problems.

My conclusion: if you like SP games CIVIII is definitely worth buying. If you want MP, it is fun already for the diehards. If you are no diehard wait with buying the game until Firaxis fixes the current problems.

AI is still messed up, and unfair to the player.

I love it. Too bad my current computer is too slow for it.

The only 'unfairness' in the AI that I've seen is the AI-AI trade rate (deficit spending). In my experience they do not gang up on the human. They will gang up on any civ they feel to be too weak, but I find that if I'm in the lead militarily they will usually go along with my diplomatic ideas (say, for example, ally against my weakest neighbor - and then there was one),

It's awesome. If I didn't have finals now I would be playing it every day.

As for the AI, vs. Civ2 AI it's no contest which is better...

I didn't play any 4x game for longer than a year. I played them all, be it Civilization, Colonization, SMAC or Call to Power with all of their sequels. With "play" I mean intensive, not only occasional nostalgy sessions. The year is over for Civ3, and I play it noticably less than I did, say, half a year ago. I'm playing EU2, 1503AD and several RPGs between my Civ3 games now. May go for MoO3 and RoN, as soon as they are available here. PtW/MP may get me back to business, if it gets fixed. If.

Civ II was the same way. It did evolve over a couple of years!

Yes, years! all the stuff was added later!

I don't see any difference with Civ III, its like tradition.

No other game, has been like Civilization!

Well, not quite! Although they have tried.

                                CTP -- really. Really not!
Sure after modding and such, but Civ II was the same way.
Where else could one play a scenario of X-COM on a computer game. Civ II you could. Where could one play on Mars with a computer game? With Civ II, you could.
Where could one play against the aliens, Hodadians alert! With Civ II you could.

Where could anyone play anything even close to what Civ II had at the end? No where!!!!!!!

Well, Civ III may just turn out to be the same way, but it takes time!

                                Please, Sid, Pretty Please!!!!

                                The New World Order, scenario!!!!
Where is there another game like Civilization!!!!

                                It's a life!!!!

                                Actually!!!!

                                Those bored, are boring themselves!!!!

It's a psych game, and well, you know, that the computer game even with the AI will give you a run for your money!!!

Takes longer playing, afterall, its virtual reality in a sense.

                                Really!!
I do not think so with other games.

Anyone, can you tell me if an editor in MOO III is there?

It was not in MOO II.

Nope, Civ II has lasted way longer than that.
Although, one may take a break, it bites, to bring you back into it, because, its just one more time, and one more turn, type of game!!!
It's an OS, in a sense!!
