  • Is the Limited Edition worth buying?

How many of you are planning to buy the LE?

I still haven't made up my mind. On the one hand the 15 buck difference isn't that much. OTOH there isn't that much in the LE. If there had been even a half-decent strategy guide or an extra scenario I would probably have brought it.

The tech tree pullout will be useful but I feel that Firaxis is cheating us by including something that was available in the regular version earlier, only in the limited edition this time.

Does anyone know what the designer notes include? If it's interesting I might consider buying the LE.

The tin box is neat but it's worth extra money only if I really like Civ 3 and keep it as a memento and I can't know that until I buy and play the game.

Finally wouldn't it have been a great idea to release the LE. one or two weeks early? That would have been a great way of getting extra dollars from the hardcore fans. I am guessing most of us would have bought the LE by now if it had been released early.

I'm going to get it, maybe the wife won't through out the box if its a tin. Yah she'll just use it to put cookies in or something. or maybe

I won't pay extra for anything like that. It's fluff, and it's the kind of marketing strategy that I hate. They try to make as much money off of you as possible. That's fine and dandy, but don't leave out the stuff that you used to give us for free. That would be like McDonalds charging you extra for pickles on their cheeseburgers.

The fact that a poster tech tree is not being included in the basic package ticks me off to no end...

Yes it is annoying but it also makes the LE more valuable in comparison to the regular edition. A tech poster is worth at least 5 bucks to me.

It would be ironic though if , by pissing us off, this strategy makes less people buy the LE than otherwise.

Nah, can't be bothered. The tech tree is fun but so long as they give me a manual what the hell do I need a biccie tin for?

                  Wittlich,
You are obviously the kind of sucker that marketing people just adore.

After thinking about it a bit, I am leaning more towards buying it for the tin box depending on how it looks. There's a pretty good chance that I will like the game after all and the box will be a cool, unique memento and pretty useful too.

Who knows; if I look after it properly and all you suckers lose yours it might be worth a fortune as an antique 50 years from now.

That's exactly how I feel. I haven't watched a boxing match since they stopped airing them on HBO. Now it's all pay for view. I REFUSE to pay for something I used to get for free.

Biscuit tins are incredibly useful, as both containers for food, stopping drink spills and hurling them at annoying people. OK, maybe I could do that with any biscuit tin, but its more fun if its a Civ3 biscuit tin!

(Will we get Civ3 unit biscuits too?)

So Kautilya, does this mean that you have decided to join this "sucker" and buy the LE? Yes, the Marketing people will adore you too!

I'm buying it because it is an LE as well. I've only bought one other LE, the Baldur's Gate LE, and while there was a little fluff involved, it was worth it, because I really loved the series. The tin and poster, I think are worth the $15, but it is a Civ LE .

And designer notes are usually done well by Firaxis... see Gettysburg!

Yeah I am gradually being sucked into the hype myself. Once upon a time I had this thoroughly naive notion of waiting and reading the reviews before buying the game. Now I am more likely to be camping overnight outside my software store and ready for fist-fights if there aren't enough copies.

BTW what exactly are the designer notes?

Yeah well, some of them now charge for cups of water, ketchup packets, and other things we used to get for free. I guess they figure if you really want it you will pay for it.
