In the original Civ, if somebody else finished a spaceship and it suceeded, I lose. In SMAC, if somebody completed the Ascent to Transcendence, but I had a pact with him, he won as well. Does anybody know about allied victory in Civ 3? I do quite like it. For example, if there are two civs of equal strength, but both slighly overpowering the ohters, and one of them is mine, war often is the result. They want to weaken the other civ so that the rival had less chance of making the spaceship. With allied victory, I could just pledge Pact to that civ and then, no matter who achieves the victory condition, both win.
Thus far, I got all the feautures I wanted included in Civ 3, that's why I am so excited. My basic requirement were something more interesting for trade than Caravans, got it with the new resource system, diplomatic model not worse than one in SMAC/CtP2, got it, and support for 16 civilizations - got it, in the end. Another is allied victory, like in SMAC - under question.

Sure, I'm all for the option for allied victory. But I don't think I'll use it in SP, as then it won't feel like a "real" victory for me. I should not win just because I made an alliance with some guy who made a spaceship. However, in multiplayer, this option probably would be more useful, as allies are more likely to actually support each other. In Civ 2, I rarely found my ai ally to be more than a person to trade techs with early and trade with. Hopefully, allied ai's will be more helpful in Civ 3.

In Civ 2 allies were worthless, because you couldn't move your troops around their Empire, and they constantly dragged you into war. In Civ 3, presumably, alliances will be more like SMAC, where allies actually served some value.

Allies in SMAC were great! They attacked enemy, fi were told to, gave you units, and let you station own units in their bases.

i agree. smac allies were great...i especially liked the "attack plotting" capability (even if teh AI was not so great at following it sometimes) i was really hoping the "attack plotting" would be carried over to civ3, but it looks like it hasn't

Didn't a Firaxis post here about a month ago or so say that Allied victory was out? I really hope not, but I could've sworn that someone did.

Well if you were winning would it be challenging for the AI to start warming up to you instead of being jealous?

An allied victory isn't a victory IMO.

question: if you were allied with someone in SMAC (say Morganites), and they were fighting someone else (say Believers), and you put units in a Morganite city, and you were NOT at war with the Believers, what happens when the Believers attack the city with your unit in it?

there is a un victory. i guess that could be considered an allied victory in that people vote for the leader.
