Maybe color assignment goes with the slots for the civs and not the individual civs themselves. Either way, pinkish-purple is a good choice. Try coming up with 16 easily distinguished colors and NOT coming up with pink.
1) Red
2) Orange
3) Yellow
4) Light Green
5) Dark Green
6) Light Blue
7) Dark Blue
8) Purple
9) Light Brown
10) Dark Brown
11) Gray
12) ???
See what I mean? And even then some colors are kind of close to others (Light Brown ~ Dark Brown, etc.).
And I still say it's sophisticated. I can appreciate it and you don't like it but it's going to be in the game anyway.
