No matter how profitable a trade relationship we may have, or how many enemies we vanquish in alliance, sooner or later Gandhi will turn on me. And since he can’t be contained like most others by simply cutting off the resource to make his UU, I always keep an eye on him.

Xerxes and Mr. Khan are a pain in the a**, but predictable. I can be certain the first diplomatic envoy that arrives on my door from one of them is there to make a demand for something of value. That’s easier to prep for. You see them near you, you start planning their downfall. Gandhi lulls you into a false sense of security before betrayal which can come at anytime.

        Welcome aboard...

I think Gandhi was intentionally designed to be that way as some kind of in-joke. He would be the last person I'd expect to try to take over the world by force of arms.

Those cities were, of course, taken only after Gandhi's unprovoked assault upon native Korean lands
Of course. I was just kidding (forgot the smiley though).

Sadly, all of the civs tend to attack unprovoked. Hope we see it get fixed in Civ4.

Well, sometimes that happened in the real world past (may I say, a lot of times). So, it would be unrealistic to "fix" that. But yes, this feature is very annoying.

Ghandi has often been a scheming warmonger in my games. Not always, but often. When he is not being crude and obnoxious, I have had good luck in being an ally and trading partner with the noble folk of India.

And yes, he will sometimes turn on me, but I expect that from my friends.

Actually the most agressive Ghandi gets is when I am Ghandi ruling the empire of India. I have used the civ to play some satisfying builder games, but many times the play of the game leads to War Elephants all over the place, teaching people the militaristic view of Pacifism. "Surrender, and we can stop fighting."

So, if the gameplay of India tempts me to go into conqueror mode, I am not surprised that the AI is similarly tempted. I may be annoyed when it happens, but not surprised.

I agree this should probably be altered in Civ4.

Depending on the AI leader/civ--for a less agressive civ (like India is supposed to be)--something along the lines of, if that AI civ is "Gracious" or "Polite" there should be almost no risk of unprovoked attack. If they're furious or cautious I can see that...

Now with an aggressive civ, like Mongols, etc. then they could do an unprovoked attack even if they are Polite or Gracious.

What do you mean by unprovoked? If you mean you have done nothing towards them, that is one thing. What about them needing more land or resources or to win?

Humans go to war for those reason all the time. I just want to have all of this island/cont/world. I just want that coal or that lux.

Speaking of Gandhi, he once prefered to go to war rather than giving me his world map in return for a tech and some gold. Ten turns he was happy to give it up for peace, being content to spend the rest of the game as a two-city civ.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Unless Civ4 had some memory built into it, so Gandhi will know that you can't be trusted longer than it takes to say 'backstabber', even in new games

Heh. I would doubt there are few wars as unprovoked as those started by humans. I have gone to war, for example, because I own the near entirely of a continent and I think it would look better on the mini map if it were all one color.

Unprovoked attacks by the AI add some spice. Otherwise it would be far too easy to manipulate the AI and pick them off one by one.
