I've always noticed that the capital always shows a 'city' icon when it is a town, and a 'metropolis' icon when it is a city. My question, though, is whether that has any effect on the defensive bonus of units stationed there. My guess is that when the capital is a town, it gets the defensive bonus of a city, and when it is a city, it gets the bonus of a metropolis. Is this right?

I've not done any rigorous testing, but it's always seemed to me the extra size of the Capital is purely cosmetic ...
NYE: Have you done any testing confirming this extra defense bonus? Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I think Catt did some testing on this IIRC.
He conclusion was that there was a bonus increase indeed, again IIRC, I'm pretty certain of the latter though. Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

DrSpike: The question was if the capital got an extra bonus, as suggested by the "big" graphics.
alva: Thanx. I'll have to do some checking around, then. Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Thats interesting, In my Mod 7 ages of man I Changed the Palace to give land, sea and air defence bonuses. I wonder if the original also gives defence for naval etc defence.
One 'problem' making the palace have citywall ability is that it Can be destroyed with an accurate Bombard! Maybe I can remove the citywall defence and leave the air defence which can be quite useful.
It makes building the palace in a important strategic position a useful tactic, as its city defence makes it far harder to conquer.
Perhaps I'll make the forbidden palace have a City wall bonus to give it more use (its changed in conquests).

I just did a little test, sending 250 of my regular Warriors against 250 (unfortified) AI ones inside their capital.
122 (48.8%) of my Warriors survived; for no extra defense bonus one'd expect 114 (45,6%), and for a +50% bonus 73 (29.1%).
This strongly suggest there's, in fact, no extra defense bonus for capitals.
Edit: Corrected a couple percentages. Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?
