We will have Literature next turn. What should we research next?

Gathering Storm claims they will receive Philosophy from some unknown source and then research Republic.

If you know what anyone else is researching, please post here.

    Possibilities: Polytheism, Philosophy, Currency, Construction.

Frankly, we should go for either Monarchy or Republic. If we go for Republic we should trail Gathering Storm and either get it at a lesser research cost or beat them to it and techwhore it first.

If we go for Monarchy we should keep it to ourselves.

Republic is too expensive IMHO at this early stage of game. The good thing is that it would cost us "only" 40 turns and we would "save" some beakers, but that would slow our tech development unless we built the Great Library.

Also, our cities are not big enough for the commerce and corruption bonus to compensate for having to pay all the units that come "free" with despotism/monarchy and the absence of military law to prevent unhapiness. Republic is for more developed states of the civ.

For these reasons I would prefer to go for Monarchy.

    Added later:
Oh, and I should also explain why I dismiss Currency and Construction.

Currency gives us 50% more money. But we must build markets for that to be useful and we haven't still built many temples, so I guess we won't need that advance for a while. It also gives us increased luxury effects from the third luxury, but again we still are far from connecting the third luxury, and the bonus isn't really important until the fifth luxury.

Construction gives us aqueducts. Not in a need of that since almost all of our cities have access to freshwater. Again, we haven't built temples so we won't built coloseums for a while. Great Wall would be a reason, but I think that the advantages that Monarchy give are better than the posibility of building the Great Wall.

We can start with the Monarchy-path, cause this will work best for us when we are backstabbing the ND. Republic can be difficult to handle after a while, in such an event.

I fully agree with Oliverfa. If we fear a war in the short or middle term, monarchy is the only way to go. Republic or currency are only useful when we'll have lots of luxuries connected, and construction isn't needed right now.

I too want Polytheism. I don’t think bribes or philosophy will do much good against ND.

Whatever helps us defend against the ND hordes so one day I don’t have to hide under the bed every night

I am for Monarchy too. Thus, go for Polytheism.

I hope we can obtain by trade some of the other techs, including Map Maping.

If we research Monarchy, I suggest Togas put on a chaincowl with a crown on top, goes to the stable and grabs himself a horse. Then he can ride to the frontier, confront the ND courier, and say: " I'm afraid there will have to be a certain amount of violence involved here..." And then... the bane of the Demons.

*phew* What a vision I just had. I must be one of the seers!?

Actually I wore an iron chaincowl today during reenactment battle with axes and bucklers. I can assure you one thing, you'll get a rust-coloured neck if you sweat...
