  • The Spanish Army

Perhaps it is time for this discussion to begin. We have always had small groups of skilled warriors that have served our nation from the beginning of time, and each group had a Cheif Warrior leading them. But as the number of groups has expanded, the time has come to think about commanding the WHOLE of the Spanish army as one great force. I would like to appoint an advisor to assist us in this matter. He would not only direct the activities of the whole of the army, he would help plan to train, expand, and modernize this army.

    Currently we have:

The Explorer's Guild -- a small, mobile, but effective group of warriors.
The Madrid Expedition -- which is on their long road home.
The Pamplona Expedition -- which is searching out Cow Valley
The Magyars -- who have joined our tribe
The Unnamed Group -- a new band who left their village near Pamplona to join us.

La Guardia de Madrid -- our finest, dedicated to ensuring our nation's safety.

Future plans must be made to increase these numbers. Presently we have a GREATER army than GoW and Lux, but one of similar size to ND.

When our expeditions are concluded I plan to bring home all warriors, upgrade them, and station them for Madrid's defense. We may also want to consider some permanent outposts and sentries on our borders. We also need to consider where to place our units, how to best defend our cities, and what units to build to fill our army.

Please use this thread to discuss these matters and to also propose one of our great Warrior Cheifs to serve as The General of the Army of Spain.

As I have more experiance with the Industrial Era Wars than the Anchent, I'm hesitant about volintering for this. But I am working on sharpening my early era skills and might take a shot at it.

I am a better builder than warrior, but I don't go to war, unless I have sufficient troops to support a proper campain.

If I do do this, I would request that we start to increase our coffers, so that we can be upgrading our forces, when the time comes. I would also request that the next build in Madrid (after the settler is complete), would be a Barracks, so that we can start training out forces for the possibility of War. We will need a Mil unit there, to keep the population Happy, while this is buiing done. for the time, Madrid should be our defensive Unit producer, let the others work with the basic Units.
    [/OOC]

Great leader Togas, My Family has often spoken of the great military accomplishments of one of our very distant Ancestors. Although, we have never really beleaved this, because of some of the other things that are in our Family Rumors, it has still been beleaved that we would be fine military peoples, if we weren't as mobile as we have been before the founding of Madrid.

Milord Togas, King of Spain, Overlord of the Visigoths, Flattener of the Vandals,

Though I, with a long backround of military history in my family's own distinguished past (you will recall the tales of Don History Guy Calamari, the swamp fox of the Wars of the Squids, or better yet, the biography of my great grandfather, who led his armies at Santiago alongside your illustrious ancestor Togas the Magnificent as a Marshal, Lord General of the Calamarquist Tribe, and was ordered to take out the enemy archers, which he did in good order, crushing the entire archer wing with his axe-men), I cannot part with my company and my duties as Ambassador or Assistant High Priest (or Chief Steward at the Mead Hall of Heorot...or Chief of El Squid Company) to put myself forward for this exulted post. I myself would prefer a smaller military post.

However, I do suggest two names. The first is Francisco Tacticus' son, for the father rarely leaves the Shrine these days, being of advanced age, and speaking to few men, mostly his assistant priests, such as myself. He is known to be a great tactician, and his great grandfather also distinguished himself as your ancestor's Right Hand Marshal at Santiago.

If not, I can think of no better man for the post than Dejon, who has already held the post of Marshal in past, and is well suited for the job.

In the Celtic land my family comes from, my ancestors mostly liked the use of archers. They're very strong against spearmen, especially the veterans. They are however quite weak to defend.
I've learnt fronm my grandfather that horsemen are the prefect troops to slay archers.
Archers are also very useful to put into cities and let attack when the enemy approaches our cities. They can weaken the enemy quite well and are very useful as long as they don't stay alone on the battlefield.

While my hope is that our unique place on this continent will keep us out of harm's way (at least until after 1 of the northern trio is defeated), that hope could be shattered. Although it is highly illogical for one of them to invade us early on, it could happen. Trip could decide to march an archer stack over the mountains towards Madrid. ND could decide to move forces en mass into Cow Valley to secure it as a ND expansion zone. GoW could send a team of horsemen down the coast to attack our new settlements. Anything, no matter how unlikely, is still possible.

We are not in position now to mass an army, but we need to form a plan about what MINIMUM numbers and units we should have, what steps we should take to ensure we have an early warning, and how we should defend our border cities.

In my mind, a military preparedness process will begin after our Pamplona settler sets forth, but it could actually begin now, in Madrid.

First, we need some sort of border patrol in place that can spot an early invading army.

Second, we will need roads to link cities together so they can share defensive units.

Third, we must quickly settle the fronteer and then fortify it. We must fortify it not only with spearmen but with two horsemen teams that can quickly move to trouble spots on the west and east. We should also prepare warriors who can be upgraded to swords to be used as our shock troops.

Finance: I plan to rush us to Mapmaking and then scale back our research and focus on buying, selling, and trading techs while we pay to upgrade swordsmen. We may also rush to Monarchy so that we can buy units and improvements instead of poprushing them.

Plans: There needs to be a plan in place to attack ND should the need arise. We should later work on plans to attack Lux once their cities come into our sphere of influence.

Goal: Peace through strength. I DO NOT want to cripple our economy paying for military units, and we will need a lot of cities to help cover the costs of our military, so we cannot stop REXing for some time. However, a strong military is vital to our survival and we must integrate our military production with our expansion.

The next two settlers are for the border cities.

This authorize 20 units without upkeep : Five workers and 15 military.

            - 5 spearmen in the cities
            - 6 warriors (4 at 3 hp and 2 at 2 hp)
            - 4 horses

When the total of 20 will be build, the 2 warriors at 2 hp should be disbanded if thay have not been promoted at that time to be replaced by horses or swords. Meantime, these 2 warriors could be lookout in the jungle.

The highest priority must be given to the roads :
            - to connect the first luxury to Pamplona then Madrid;
            - to connect Pamplona to the two border cities.
            Statistical anomaly.

The 2 northern boarder cities can be the initial center for our next group of Workers, as they will be somewhat limited in size and Growth Rates (at least until they have some Irrigation Added).

Even though we are a Commerial Nation, The Corruption/Waste in the Cities will not be reduced until they are connected to the Trade Network (Corruption Distance Factor is times 1.0 when not connected, times 0.85 when it is connected).

The Ability to produce Veteran Units is also a must have. We will need to have some Barracks built soon (but not too soon) in Madrid & Pamplona.

The thing is to make sure that we have a proper Balance of all of our needs, Military, Science & Commercial.

Señor Tamali, I was vaguely considering requesting a worker be built in Pamplona after our first Settlers. It hasn't been discussed yet because it was still 8-9 turns away. I just wanted to throw it out there. I think we are in dire straits when it comes to networking the cities together.

                  Military Defense Projects:

                  Early Warning Division

We're going to need FIVE warriors to act as guardians in the north that will be able to give us an early warning in the event that an enemy is moving south to attack us.

I plan to station 3 of these warriors in the north-western jungle, one in the middle of Las Sierra Brilliantes, and one at Gateway peak (the brown mountain at the top of the jungle next to the Arabian Mountains).

                  Cow Valley Defense Plan

4 Key cities (2 on the river, 2 backing them up) all with 1 turn of separation and the ability for units in the back cities to strike the enemy the moment they cross Rio Pirhana. Flexible defense. Will rely strongly on the use of horsemen to attack enemy forces prior to their attack on our cities. Defenders mass to point of attack.

Current problems: Need to add to plan so that an approach from the tile north of the horses, going AROUND the river can be dealt with. Currently, this is the most logical invasion route into the valley. Some creative thinking will be needed to solve this problem.

Will require first that cities are made and that roads are made to allow for the rapid movement of units between all cities. Border cities will have 3 defenders minimum, walls, barracks, temples. Horsemen to be stationed in all cities and moved as the need arises.

                  Barbarian Patrol

A small group (3-4) of horsemen will travel the wilderness searching out barbarian huts and destroying them, and then leaving them room to regrow. Repeat cycle. Will allow us to profit from spoils takens from these savages. These groups may also be called upon to protect our settlements and fight off barbarian uprisings.

                  Eastern Defenders

Some discussion needs to be done on how to defend Madrid and our cities East of Pamplona. Due to the terrain, we may be able to use swordsmen or horsemen with a decent road system. The East may rely more on early warning and the mass infusion of horsemen from Cow Valley to come to their aid.

This sounds good. However I'd like to know what we will do between now and the time we have the cities and units necessary for these plans.

I'd like to see a early version of the Early Warning Division, at least.

I assume TEG will be escorting Basher for awhile. The Madrid Expedition will complete their jungle exploration in 4 turns, and then can head to any number of waypoints. The Pamplona, Maygar, and Bulgar Warriors could also assist, but will take varying amounts of time to get into position.

Request from the Governor of Madrid

Madrid will need a second military unit, ideally a warrior currently on exploration duties, to be brought to the city in order to hold down unrest on those turns where unrest is an issue.

Such a warrior could participate in an "early warning system" as long as they did not stray far from Madrid and were able to enter the city during periods of potential unrest.

If Plan B for Madrid is followed (building the temple), such a warrior may not be necessary at all or only for a very limited period of time.

Once we get Horses connected up

Once we get the Horses connected up and have a city that can build a few of these fine units, we need to start having some roving patrols, so that we can quickly kill any Barbarian Encampments that might come up.

                            [OOC]
I see the need for 2 to 3 to patrol the our main area while we are REXing and maybe 1 to work between Sierra Brillientes and the Jungle. The first few will not have to be Vets, if we work it correctly and have them promoted from the Barbs.

The sooner that we are able to destroy a Barb camp, the sooner that another one will pop up. This will mean much more money for us to work with.
