  • The Annals of Iberia

Because we are going to have a 6000+ year history, the Chronicles are soon going to become so long that even 2000 years from now only the Wise are going to have the time to read them. How, then shall the common people remember our history? They will be so discouraged at its length that they will not have the heart to even look at our scrolls, even the exciting ones. And then they will be indifferent to their Spanish culture, and will easily convert to other inferior, yet not so burdensome, cultures.

Therefore, so that our history is not forgotten, in order to lessen the burden of memory on the common people who do not have time to read our whole history, and on the little children learning about our history from their elders, I begin here the Annals of Iberia, in which I provide a simple and easily remembered list of our glorious rulers of the House of Togas, together with the most important thing they did during their reigns.

May the Spirits bless me in this my endeavour.

    Ronní the Annalist

Two dates are provided here: the first in the ancient pagan calendar dating from the Battle of the Plains of Santiago, and the second in the modern calendar dating from the Incarnation of Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ.

        Footnotes:

        1. In honour of the three Togases, the Elder, the Wanderer, and himself, the Builder, Togas III decreed that all Despots of the dynasty would forevermore commemorate the achievements of all three by having the syllable -tog- in their official regnal name. So Enero would be Eneretogo, Vallo would be Vatogallo, etc.

[OOC: Or maybe it’s Señor Pikesfan who invented the decree... it’s those who bother to take up the pen that write the history ]

          OOC

Notes, to explain the method to my madness, which will eventually be deleted once they are no longer noteworthy:

          1. Because Togas is starting to call himself Enero, an Enero is ruling during 3950 BC. (This is what I mean about listening to Togas.)

          2. But because 50 years is too long a reign for the Late Stone Age, I interpolated a couple of names so that the length of reigns are realistic for the time period. Therefore we are “really” in Eneretogo II as the official name in the chronicles and for carving on the base of statues, but everyone just refers to him Enero when they dare to refer to him by name, Enero II if they want to be formal, yet still daring. To call him Eneretogo II in his hearing would imply that he was dead, which is not a good thing...

          3. The maximum reign in the Stone Age will be 35 years. So I am having QuattroPro pick a random number between 0 and 35.

          4. Once we enter the Bronze Age, the maximum reign will be 40 years.

          5. When I was a child, I used to love making up dynasties.

            (Calamari Family Tree)

Pedro de History Guy Calamari, called 'El Burro'
            5123 - 4081

Pedro was, according to family historians, the first true head of the tribe of the Calamari, the unifier, so to speak. In 2098, at the battle of the Hovel Hill, Pedro charged his small army to destroy the Calamarquists, the renegade faction of the Calamari clan. Pedro unified the Calamaris, but was murdered by a treacherous dancing midget in the year 2081. The midget subsequently escaped into the desert to become a hermit.

Pedro's most famous saying was: "I am not a fool. I just don't know how to act." He was known for being a bit slow at the wit, and was thus the family's black sheep until the unification. From that point on, they all waited for the assassination they knew would come, and were happy to receive as clan head...

Juan de History Guy Calamari (called El Toro)
            4074 - 4036

Juan de History Guy Calamari was the favorite of the Calamari clan during the period that Pedro ruled. He became even more famous when he chipped in at the famous meeting of the tribes and gave one of the deciding votes on the unification. He also had a prominent part in the battle of Santiago, and the subsequent battle of Madrid, and some claim that he was the slayer of Alaric's son. His most famous achievement was to fry squid and eat it for the first time, making Spain's favorite meal. He died of an illness in 2036.

He was best known for his incredible boldness and yet at the same time a genuine piety that perhaps influenced the religion of Iberia in a profound way.

Don History Guy Calamari (called El Proscuitto)
            4053 - 4012

Don History Guy Calamari, known either as El Proscuitto or the Godfather, became the ninth official mayor of Madrid during his lifetime, but was forced to resign, and exiled into the squid business for reasons undisclosed. Whatever the reason, he constructed the world's most famous commercial business, El Squid Company, which monopolized seafood, but especially calamari. He controlled the company well, but he died as a result of a large oyster attempting to survive by latching onto his throat while he was trying to swallow it. He died within twelve minutes, and was greatly mourned all over Spain.

He was...well, there's not much we want to say about him.

Hernan de History Guy Calamari (called El Magnifico)
            4031 - ????

Hernan de History Guy Calamari is the present head of the Calamari tribe, and the second most popular, only beaten by a nose by Juan the Great. He has strived to do all he can for the common good, and to battle as well as he can lawlessness and corruption (while under the protection of the government). He will reign over this tribe, hopefully, for a long time to come.

            Viva Hernan!

I found a site which listed some ancient Basque names

and which listed some modern Basque names

so I decided to adopt those for dynastic names during the first three millennia.

If we really want to delude the other teams, I could post the Annals onto the PtW board (minus the deeds after Togas III). It would make them think we were so interested in pretending that we were too distracted to play Civ3 properly.

Note the new name under "D" in the index.

And here is a compact family tree, done in the style of Burke’s Peerage. Have I nothing better to do? Not tonight I need some more exciting relations than son, brother, grandson, such as second cousin who gained the throne by murdering everyone before him in a hunting accident

How, then shall the common people remember our history? They will be so discouraged at its length that they will not have the heart to even look at our scrolls, even the exciting ones. And then they will be indifferent to their Spanish culture, and will easily convert to other inferior, yet not so burdensome, cultures.

Idea : put our history into heroic songs and poets, I think those are easier to remember. If we should let our children learn them by heart and they learn their children to do so, etc, our history can be remembered without clay-tablets.

Great, let’s have a fourth historian

The Chronicler (haven’t heard from him lately)
The Annalist, to record the reigns
The Chronologist, to record the events year-by-year
The Epicist, to set our deeds into poetry and song

Perhaps somebody who's better in English than I am should ask our most honoured leader Cistogon XIII to enter his service
