  • Trading strategy from the start

Giving the MP/PBEM trading functions differently than in the single player game, we need to come up with a policy about what we are/are not willing to trade w/AI & human players. Here are some generally questions:

Do we trade anything to human players? To the AI?

by the way kind of of this particular topic, I am also in favor of trying to establish embassies with human players as soon as possible. It allows us to find out where their capital is w/o hoping that they have traded their TM or WM to some AI. Likewise it prevents the other team for finding out where our capital is.

I agree. Diplomacy will be much more important in this game than any against the AI.

    Embassies are a must.
Trade will be most likely be necassary at some point.
Keeping the AI and other teams out of our territory will be very important.

      Trade tech with everyone.

I disagree. Lets say we trade Iron Workign with AI. Then Persians get it from AI. Means they get secure Iron and get Immortals quicker. Same with techs leading to Monachy. The longer they stay a despot the better.

I generally do not trade tech, unless it is not immediately harmless. Pottery, Ceremonial Burial, Writing, the wheel, mysticism, etc... are good examples.

Maybe we could only trade techs with 2 or 3 civs, in order to get a tech lead. We give them currency in return for construction etc.
We would try and keep the big science rich civs at a low tech level.
AI's tend to give up techs in exchange for peace after a war, so we should work to cripple the AI civs.

When I have a tech lead, I find if someone gives you a good amount of money for it, its good to sell it, but always try and keep at least 2 Techs ahead.

For science its best to research 2 or 3 techs down one branch, so no one else will get those techs before you , and you tigten your grip on the tech lead. This is complicated but it worked in my roman game- the enemies could research combustion, but as I had researched right down to Motorized I was still ahead of them.. if I'd researched flight then i'd be further behind.
(IE research all the way to monarchy and you will outrun the enemies tech research, )

Admiral PJ, I persue tech similarly...but with my earlier mentioned exception->I won't trade away a strategic advantage.

We should hope for a nice close human neighbour nearby. Then we could make huge trade deals with them - for example we research the top half of the science screen, and they the bottom half, and then we trade. I expect every team to try to work such a thing out.

Not if we trade tech to both AI AND the persians... why miss the opportunity to make even more stronger economy by selling the tch multiple times!??

Of course as a tech leader (which I see ourselves going) we will have the authority to hold out on our trade as long as possible. But whenever we trade tech, it should be us who sells it to all the civs.

Tech is a perishable item, like food, raw supply of uranium... they have a expiration date. If we hold out on tech and never trade them, we will effectively have wasted some valuable meat that we can wave at another civ, since they wont need them. Why make a diplomatic agreement with hard crispy golden coins when you can give the enemy a tech a turn before the tech will be researched by rest of community?

If we researched a tech at price of 400 trades, and we charge the first civ 200 gold and the other two civ the price of 100 gold each, it would be like someone gave us the tech free. That's undercharging the civ with gold!

If we traded a tech for tech, we will have effectively gotten 3 tech for giving one tech to the community. Not only that, we will have ruined the opponents chance to make opportunity profit by denying them the chance to trade the same tech to other ppl. Diplomacy is crucial here... We need to be able to do a "middleman" job when it comes to tech trading and greedily make profit
