i think we should have adequate defenses but we shouldn't over invest in defense
i don't think we need more than one spearman in each city except for our capital or some other super city our garisons should be offensive units for the most part that we can quickly throw into any kind of scrape we get into
while the game rules do give an advantage to the defender, from a strategic standpoint it is much better to be on offense than defense, because it is the person on defense who is in danger of having their cities burnt down

1 garrison? what difficulty are we playing on?
not 1 garrison, but one garrison defencive unit. The other is offencive for attacking units who closing in on city.. still think more than 1 def units will defenatly be needed. true is still that some offencive units inside the citites wouldn't hurt..

i assumed we were playing emperor (apparently incorrectly). i guess we can pull off 1 garrison unit in each city, but i usually have a spearman/warrior in every city, and more on the borders.

one spearman plus either archers (if swordsmen aren't available), swordsmen, or horsemen is what i'm saying...plus we need to play offensively, get enough garrisons to keep our cities happy, have a couple of mobile reserves for protection but have the bulk of our forces in other people's territory
if we are going to play as warmongers that will be the only way we will pull this off, if we don't hammer our enemies early on, we'll be in trouble later on when they decide to gang up on us

We might want to keep this in mind in regards to secret alliances.
If we can scare 2 civs into believing that we can reduce them to ruble pretty fast. In this case the pen is mightier than the sword.
