  • The Number One Threat

    NYE's Gathering Storm just recruited some "pinch hitters" today. Sir Ralph is recruiting "the creme of the strategy forum" so to speak. I already considered it a threat with SirRalph there but it has definitely moved to #1 spot on my must kill asap list.

    We might want to keep this in mind in regards to secret alliances.

        Honestly, I am not necessarily looking forward to this. It's like fighting against Rommel, Eisenhower, Napoleon, and Ghengis Khan with a worn out broomstick.

        The question is do we try to ally with them OR against them?

        Should we try to recruit some more strategians ourselves? Heck, even the builders are getting ready to pass us in numbers.

        Of course we could always conquer them and force them into our empire.

          This presents an interesting point, what will happen to players when their civ gets destroyed? Can they join other groups? Sorry if there has been other discussion on the subject; I just haven't seen it.

              This is starting to shape up as the Super Bowl of Civ3, the winning team is going to really have some bragging rights!

                I'm tending to agree with you, GF. I readly don't like the path this game is taking. I was hoping for a quick game so we could all learn a bunch about how the Multi-site game is going to go. But with NYE recuriting people, he has turned it into a popularity contest.

                I am also hoping that the players he recurited really will just be stand-bys. That they won't actively participate or that their great strategic minds will be overwhelmed by the "democratic process".

                  Keep in mind, they have not stated their preferred civ yet either.

                  Being the gambling man that I am, anyone want to bet on which they are leaning towards?

                  And, should it come up, how would we defend against mounted warriors? (I know a few of them on the team prefer Iriquois...)

                    4 spearmen, walls, a terrain bonuses (rivers, hills, mtns), and prayer (if you believe this that sort of bulllsh!t)

                      fortified veteran spearmen, along with a force of either horsemen or swordsmen to preempt them...defensively a well developed road network is our best friend

                      also one other question, do catapult automatically do 1 hp of damage to attackers?

                        ONE catapult will ATTEMPT to do ONE hp of damage to ONE attacker ONCE PER TURN.

                        it CAN fail. im not sure what fortifying does to it (increased chances?).

                          we could always use the terrain to our advantage. we could not only build cities on hill themselves, but use nearby mountain ranges to defend / slow down enemies.

                          when i first started playing civ3, i actually used fortresses (before i realized how predictable the AI was). i guess the strategies would still apply.

                          by building a fortress and fortifying a unit (preferably more) EVERY OTHER SQUARE, anything that tries to move past it (through it) gets a free shot on them (fortresses give a ZOC to units inside). throw some spearmen and catapults in there (you'll have to road it to get a catapult there) and you got a kickass defense. as the MW approach you fire the catapults on them, and if they try to break through you, they lose even more HP.

                          if they try to attack the VETERAN SPEARMEN FORTIFIED IN A FORTRESS ON A MOUNTAIN they're facing what, +200% defense (i'm not a civ-stats person... 100% for the mountain, is it 100% for fortress? and dont you get a bonus for being fortified?)

                          so you're looking at a MW (3-1-2) going against our insane spearmen, with a defense of 4 or 5.

                          now watched, i jinxed it and we're in the middle of some desert / tundra with no hills anywhere.

                            Hill= +50%
                            Mountian= +100%
                            Fortress= +50%
                            Fortified= +25%

                            So a fotified spear in a fortress on a mountian would be:
                            2 (base defense)
                            2 (terrian bonus)
                            1 (fortress bonus)
                            .5 (fortified bonus)
                            5.5 total defense.

                            Hmmm.... that sounds good. I propose that all our cities should be built on hills, if at all possible. We might need to sacrifice a little of the optimal location to do this, but automaticly makes spear into pikes with reguards to defensive value.

                              maby not all cities, that might be hard but as many as possible i must agree too. (depend on desenty of hills through). And some fortress might be a good idea, still maby we should not put too much effort in building thoose, still good against humans i guess but they aint as good as in civ2 when you couldn't move through squares close to enemy units.
                              Anyway some allies wouldn't be such a bad idea. Some ppl on the forum seem to be weary about us? can't understand why.. must be something about or name or so.
