  • It is quite fascinating, by far the most interesting portion of the game, I think, with all the varialbes and teams.

One of the reasons I previously mentioned subs was due to the matter of our pickets being removed.

If we maintain a picket line of transports, we could have a set of subs offset by say 2 squares. Not only would they be unlikely to be run into, with such a vast ocean, especially when movement speed is essential, but in the event the pickets are destroyed, we would know exactly what they are doing.

Subs suck, they suck hard in SP. But positioned correctly and with a little luck, they could come in handy. Maybe not enough to salvage stormia, but at least to funnel infantries into more appropriate positions.

    • At first I though that subs could be seens by detroyers, but they can't - only by other subs and AEGIS Cruiser.

So yes, they could make a good picket net that would be hard to dispose of without around 1 sub + 1 destroyer per picket sub.

Fighters could recce from home cities (must check their range) or more penetratively from heavily defended carrier groups near
home. The carriers lurch fwd, the fighters recce in various directions, and the carrier moves back to safety on the rest of its turn.

      • yup, that's what I was thinking with carriers. have a few stationed a square or 2 outside a port, move out a bit, fly some recon, then back to port. The more redundancy we can build into our defense the better, and most of what we build can be used on offense soon anyway.

        • We want at least a couple subs, not only to hopefully be invisible lookouts, but just in case THEY have any subs.

          • What happened to Theseus, anyway? I thought he was fired up for this.

I remain only semi-active, sorry. I'll be away for the next 4 days entirely.

            • Yes, a couple of roving subs looking for enemy subs, but seeing as the key to security is getting the heads-up on where the attack is coming from, the more nodes in the net, the harder it is to take down that net.

With nodes invisible to surface ships, backed up by carrier-based arial scouting, the chances of having to defend a long coastline 'blind' as in the scenario I painted above are very low.

Hence, ~ a dozen subs would be a good investment as a defensive picket net. Not useful on the offense, but I'm sure we'd always find a use for them as eyes somewhere on the map.

              • Great to see this is getting together . One thing, though: economically, it's better to build destroyers now, and build land units once we mobilize (which will be needed once we start building tanks). Which means we ahve to go with the lowest possible land units build.

We've got a lot of obsolete units, waiting to be upgraded. Are we going to do the upgrades in 5 turns, or wait for invasion? It will bump our army strength most likely equal, or stronger then Lego, which in itself is a scary thing for them and calls for a better defense.

                • subs... right... I'll try to work it in. 80 shields, right? that means WoC can be a 1-turn sub pump

They'll be useful in subhunting for lego subs when we take out their pickets. quite hit or miss, but you never know....

Don't know. He made several dynamic posts then disappeared. I hope he's OK.

                          Subs are 100s, unfortunately.

                          80s : Rifleman, Artillery, Fighter
                          90s : Infantry, Guerilla
100s : Transport, Submarine, Marine, Tank, Bomber
                          120s : Destroyer
                          180s : Carrier
                          200s : Battleship

Also, Vulture, can you confirm that your tables are all based on the Marine attack of 8 in PTW not 12 as in C3C?

                          • Hmmmm.... not so good. If I can spend the knights (as I'm still not convinced of their use as pillagers), WoC can become a sub pump. Otherwise, carriers (with shortrushing), or Battleships should be build there.
